Deny: Responsibility Packer Firm Says North Dakota Farmer Made Mistake— Fails to Meet His Big Point Chicago, II1., Jan. 20, 1919. Editor Nonpartisan Leader In the Leader of December 23, yo published a letter written by C l%l Creighton of Spiritwood, N. D. .In his letter, Mr. Creighton stated that on November 29 he shipped to the St. Paul market 31 hogs, all of about the same size and condition; that 16 of these hogs, because of welghmg above 140 pounds each, sold for 17 cents, and that the remaining 15 hogs brought only 123, cents because they averaged under 140 pounds éach. He claims that each of the 15 hogs weighed between 135 and 139 pounds and he holds that this weight dis- crimination cost him $98.60 and is un- Justlfiable Mr. Creighton is under the impression that all of his hogs were sold to Swift & Co. and he, therefore, blames them for his loss. The facts are that on November 29 there was received. at the St. Paul yards a carload of hogs shipped in by the Co-Operative Exchange from Spiritwood, N. D. This car contained 86 hogs weighing 12,180 pounds, aver- aging in weight 142 pounds. The rec- ords show that 80 of these hogs, weighing 5,980 pounds, and averag- ing 198 pounds each, were sold to- Swift & Co., and the remaining 56, weighing 6, 250 pounds, and averaging . only 112 pounds each, were sold to Farrell. We have also learned that the ship- ment of 86 hogs referred to was sup- plied by the following shippers: Average Hogs Pounds pounds Creighton .... 31 4,400 142 E. L. Gibson .. 8 700 87% - B. Bjornsen ... 3 . ° 410 137 Ebner Hanson. 4 470 117 Charles Legger 11 1,960 178 Thos. Davis Sr. 5 1,000 200 James Brennan: 10 --1,030 - 108 Dave Price ... .6 740 123 1 B. Sayre,..... 1 340 340 T. Wetherby .. 2 600 300 J. Hays ...... 5 - 750 150- It appears that Swift & Co. pur- chased few, if any, of Mr. Creighton’s hogs, as the 30 hogs we purchased averaged 198 pounds, while Mr. - Creighton’s hogs averaged in weight only 142 pounds. Will you please pubhsh this .ex- planation in an-early”issue of your paper so that Mr. Creighton and others of your readers may be cor- rectly informed in the matter. Very truly yours, SWIFT & CO., PerO C. E. Matthies, Commer- cial Research Department. EDITOR’S NOTE: We have writ- ten Mr. Creighton of Spiritwood, N. .D., and he admits he was mistakent in saymg that Swift & Co. purchased all of his: hogs. He says that Swift bought 16 of his hogs at 17 cents per pound and that the remaining 15 were purchased by Farrell at 123 cents per pound." The above letter from Swift & Co. does not dispute Mr. Crexghtons story about his hogs as published in Mr. Creighton’s letter in the Leader, except to deny that Swift & Co. was to blame for dlscrlmma- txon in price, LEAGUE AS THE FARMERS’ HOPE Stonington, Col. Editor Nonpartisan Leader:- I read the Leader pretty carefully, and I want to say to you that in my judgment I think you handle the many questions which are before the public for attention better than they are handled by any other paper I take. And I take and read a good many. I flatter myself that I stand for the right between man and man, even though it might be to my personal disadvantage to do so. And I think the stand you take with regard to the excess profits taxes is certainly a right and just one, and .I hope you will keep up-this line of . drgument until EVERY FARMER IN THE UNITED STATES becomes con- vinced that the TLeague is the only solution of the many troubles attend- ing his existence as a farmer, and joins with us to assist in righting the ; wrongs under which we labor. As long as the League continues to stand for the things it does now I am going to pay in my $16 and do what- ever €lse I can to help the cause along, even though we never make any progress at all. But I believe we will. We didn’t do very much in this part of the country at the last -election, but we certainly expect.to do better the next time. here kept many country voters at home, and this tended almost exclu- sively to cut down the vote of the Nonpartisan candidates. One thing I am particularly glad to see you do is to take these so- called “farm papers” to task where they work against the League. / And 1 had just as well say “against the farmer,” for that is what they are doing. And as long as they can continue to hoodwink the farmer into believing they ‘are his friends, they will con- tinue to wheedle the money out of him. I have already stopped a few I have been taking for a good while, and expect to stop more of them as I find them out. Yours truly, : SAM M.
