Dot 12 Mewrs, Wi o i e, | v , from mmipulanon'by tlle _banking in- terests for their own gain, - The American. Federation of Labor believes that the issuing of money should be a government fpnction in fact as well as in name. At the pres- ent time the bankers control the issue ernment prints ‘the paper. The print- but the amount of issue and the rate of interest are and that is why the bankers have taken control of them. 20. We favor a system of federal government postal savings banks. The present system of postal sav- ings banks is practically a fraud on the common' people.” The postmaster receives money from the public to which he pays a ridiculously low rate of interest and then turns this money over to the banker across the street, the favored banker, for less than this banker has to pay for money from other sources. At the same time the government is paying 4% to 5 per cent for money by the bond-issuing method. There is no reason, for instance, why the postmaster could not get at least 5 per cent for this money by in- vesting it directly in federal farm loan bonds and in turn pay the deposi- tors 4 to 4% per cent interest. The reason why the postal savings bank is not put on a businesslike footing is the fact that it would then compete with the private banking monopoly. A GREAT ORGANIZATION A fair idea of the size of the Amer- ican Federation “of Labor may be " gathered from the facts that 110 in- ternational trade unions, with over 24,000 local unions, are affiliated with it, that there are 45 state federations, 715 city central bodies and 542 other local trade and federal labor unions having no internationals, and that it employs- 1,885 volunteer and special organizers in addition to the officers of the unions and the federation. There are over 2,000,000 members. It is the result of over two genera- tions of great effort on the part of the workers and their organizers and lead- .ers to better their conditions of liveli- hood and to make their country a bet- ter place for the common man to live in. It has been built, as the organ- ization of the farmers is being built, with much sacrifice and. in spite of bitter, unfair and unlawful persecu- tion by those who” are anxious to ex- ploit the people. .- The federation of labor, however, does not “comprise all of organized labor. There are many local and na- tiontal organizations that have not af- filiated with it either because the fed- eration will not admit them or be- cause they do not -want admlssxon. the' question of ' whether workers should be organized in crafts or:in- dustrially. There is also the question _of whether labor’s organized effort should be confined to securing better wages and ‘shorter hours mainly or where ' they are anxious to make labor's influence felt politically in re- form legislation. More discussion and .more organization on both sides of tlon. PLEASED WITH LEADER Ed:tor Nonpartisan Leader: ciples of the Leader and hope to see them in practice soon.
