William M.' Webster of Roosevelt, Okla., and S. R. Cary of Piedmont have written to the Leader calling attention to the situation. A few years ago ‘the Democrats, being in- the maJorlty, and yet fearmg the Republican and Socialist - parties, framed a law to prevent any marty not castmg 27, per cent of the last gov- ernor’s vote in a primary election from appearing on the ticket in the general election. The law was in- & tended to avoid fusion of parties, but their own game caused fusion. The Republicans got on the ballot by a § scratch. The Socialists lost, and now the Republicans will get the Socialist vote. : The combined vote will equal 144,000, compared to the Democrats’ 115, 1000, Of course, the Democratic machine must find a way out. Now the at- torney general thinks the law uncon- stitutional and will take it before the supreme court. “Watch the League climb as never before,” the Leaguers write. WANTS A FRIENDLY PAPER Newport, Wash. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: As I am a member of the League and a believer in its principles, I re- sent the abuse heaped upon us simply | because we differ with the editors of the. small-town papers. They seem to have a greater grouch against us now since we are stopping these un- friendly papers. I have ordered two of them to discontinue sending their paper and I think there will be more some friendly papers; preferably some farm paper. I think it would ‘be a good thing if the Leader would print the names and addresses of all the friendly papers in the state of Wash-. ington.. This will give our members a chance of hitting back at the press - that is so unfair to the- orgamzed farmers. This“isn’t a pink tea; it is a fight to a finish. I am in favor of the League own- ing more than one paper. Idaho has control of several small papers. The League is doing excellent work. Keep it up! We will stick! - s ED BALCHELOR.
