Me. Mention the Leader When Writing Advertisers e e e e B i o e o Foil a Polifical Plot in Montana Effort to Split the Membership and Give Indorsements to Self-Seeking Politicians Ended Ingloriously - FEW hungry officeseck- ers made a futile effort to dupe Montana mem- bers of the National Nonpartisan league July 1. Without authority from the membership or officers of the League, a mass convention was called to meet in Great Falls. . The scheme evidently was either to split the farmers’ votes, or to steal an in- dorsement for certain politicians. Only 24 members of the League paid any attention to the call and attended the meeting, but it was fortunate that this many were there to nip the plot in the bud. The convention was an- nounced by its promoters to cover two days, but it lasted only two hours. That was all the time it took for the loyal Leaguers present to quash the scheme. The Great Falls Daily Leader gives this account of the events: “Sam W. Teagarden of . Forest Grove started something in the Non- partisan convention, but slid down the banisters at the end of a perfect day, and the stuff was off. The head of- ficers of the League here disclaimed all responsibility for the meeting called by Mr. Teagarden and Mr. Ar- nold, the latter also kicking out after, his arrival in our beautiful city. "~ = “Mr. Teagarden charged that Jea- nette Rankin had been promised in- dorsement of the League for United States senator. R. B. Martin, gen- eral organizer, stated that as no con- vention had been held, no such action could possibly have been taken. After a few more passages at arms, Mr. Martin moved that a committee be named to draw up resolutions to the effect that there was nothing upon which to base the Teagarden call, and to express the confidence of those present in President A. C. Townley. The motion carried with a. whoop, and Mr. Teagarden was named on the committee. The following resolutions were adopted unanimously, and the meeting adjourned very much sine die, and Sam slid down the banisters.” This was the committee report: “A gathering. of members of the Nonpartisan league, - representing many sections of the state, was held this afternoon at Carpenters’ hall in obedience to a call made by members in Fergus county. After a full dis- cussion of the purpose of the call, members came to the unanimous agreement that the purposes for which the call was made are satisfactorily cared for by the state and national organization. The membership also expressed entire confidence in the leaders of both the state and national organization, and sent to President Townley the following message: ‘We'll Stick!’ “Sam W. Teagarden, L. F. Border, R. B. Martin.” Thus ended the effort of an overly ambitious man of small attainments to use the great organization of the Nonpartisan league to boost himself into the United States senate. Feeding It to Him Oh honest farmer, pardon me, I wonder how you stand the bunk They hand to you so lavishly In such a large and growing chunk. They say you feed the human race, A work that noble is and grand, | And then they watch your smiling face And see your worthy chest expand. : i—’ou feed the world, a job that keeps You pretty busy, I should say, For while the profitmonger sleeps You jump the fence and toil away. To raise the stuff that others share, You spend some 16 hours of stress And manage, if your luck is fair, To get a living more or less. You feed the world, but in between Your patches, and the men who eat Are standing, satisfied and clean, The gang that lives on Easy street. Just why they should enjoy the cream You can’t exactly figure out, But if it isn’t all a dream, There’s something you might think about. . =—D. M. S.
