Assuming that we could sell bonds to $10,000,000 to farmers in the near fu- ture they alone could finance the fed- eral land banks for this year. At an average of $100 each it would amount to one billion dollars. Even one-half this number would take care of the financial situation for the present, and urging the sale of these bonds through each association each year would finance the banks entirely. Yours very truly, HOWARD M. PERRY, Sec'y.-Treas., Beaverton National Farm Loan Association. UNFAIR NEWSPAPERS Comfrey, Minn. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: I want to call your attention to a clipping from the Comfrey Times, reading as follows: - ‘“Louis Martin, Goodhue county or- ganizer for the Nonpartisan league, was arrested at Red Wing Tuesday for making seditious utterances while addressing an audience. Criticism of the government with the idea of making it more easy to win the war ‘and seditious utterances are.two dif- ferent things. “Some of the Nonparti- san league fellows can’t make the dis- tinction.” This editor depends almost entirely on the farmers for the support of his paper but he jumps at the chance to publish an article that was featured by our worst enemy, the St. Paul Pio- neer Press. Because the Press says this fellow was arrested he takes’ it as a matter of course that he was guilty of sedition before he ever comes to trial. He also sees fit to tell us that we, the members of the Non- partisan league, can’t tell the differ- ence between seditious utterances and criticism of the government such as Theodore Roosevelt makes, telling the world that we have nothing but wooden guns apd that the present administration is inefficient, that they should kneel to him and adopt his ideas, for this nation can not exist without him. Now, fellow members, can you lend your support-to.a paper that is willing to slap 150,000 League members in the face because one man was arrested by an over zealous sher- ift. for condemning the policies of Big Business? I for one can not and furthermore will not. I consider my- self too good an American citizen to kneel to the will of an editor that is willing to lend his paper to the press of Big Busineéss when we, the farm- ers, make that editor’s living by our oveatano ALUMINUM SHOES FromFactery Forall rough, wet work subscriptions and our advertising. A DYED-IN-THE-WOOL LEAGUER. FOR THE CO-OPERATIVE MOVEMENT ‘We have reason to believe that the Government will in a ve{?' short time assist in establishing the Rochdale System of Co-Operation in the United States, On account of the interest that has already developed and the demand for this system to be put in operation and the lack of knowledge of the essential features that were necessary to make the Rochdale System a success, it became necessary for us to establish a school to teach and train people to do the work. We started school on November 1st, and it was a success from the start, yvet we are not getting enough people to take up the work as fast as demands .are being made for managers for Co-Operative Stores that we are establishing and men to sell stock to establish co-operative institutions. This School is for the purpose of training people in the true principles of the Rochdale System of Co-Operation so that the people that we interest may know and understand that it is a plan of “Each for all and all for each.” e ~ want every Red-Blooded American that has more interest in the Common People than in. dollars to come and see us or write us, and we will assure you that . if you will take up this work with the spirit that.is necessary in any work to make a success, that the people with whom you meet and interest to take part in’the movement will be benefitted, and you will receive a compensation equal “to'or better than you have ever received béfore. ; R b his work is being conducted by the Aiaerican Rochdale Union, an educa- tional Organization teaching co-operation and establishing Business Institu- tions on the combined plan of the Rochdale System as being operated in England, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark and other Buropean Countries, and is fo . i the tli:o-operzm.lvel lnstl%utio?s of ?Eerlca what the Co-Operative Union, Ltd., is . to the co-operative enterprises of Europe. ) “Write for further information, or call at the Ninth Floor, Pioneer Building. “AMERICAN ROCHDALE UNION Educational Organization. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: ' The amendment of Senator Weeks of Massachusetts which would throttle - the federal farm loans to.the farmers, would, in my opinion, be thrusting the knife into the hearts of the farmers of the Northwest, who have been depend- ing on aid through the federal farm loan banks to- help them hold their land, so they can raise the crop the | government ' has called_ for. Talk about the I. W. ,W. in North Dakota—it looks like 1. W. W. work in the Weeks amendment. This would throttle the farmers worse than they. ever have been' throttled. Mr. Weeks should try to improve the federal farm down.
