THIS IS THE WAY THEY ‘‘STICK’’ FOR BAER Editor Nonpartisan Leader: ‘Wyndmere, N. D., June 4, 1917. I understand that Baer is our Nonpartisan league candidate for congress in the First district. I got a letter from (naming another candidate in the race) and he wants me to get some names on his nominating petition. But I sent it back. And I told him that we had too many lawyers in congress now. Yours truly, N. C. JENSEN, Leaguer. If This be Treasoh— (Continued from page 6) anew, not to live for decades in the mire of national bondage. “You send your millions of boys across the water. They go and go freely, and give freely of their lives to defend their nation; and when the war is over let us see what happens: They come back—all come back?—ah, no! ‘When the war is over, this government gives back to them such of their lives as is left; gives back to these boys their body minus an arm; gives back _ to the mothers and the fathers of these Young men of their lives what is left— one arm gone; two arms gone; three limbs; ALL their limbs perhaps; gives them back to you destroyed physically for life; gives them back to you per- haps blinded for life, or deaf, or blinded and deaf for lifel Gives back to you what is left of their lives—back to their sweethearts; back to their brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers —back to the little children that have been crying for them all these years. The government gives back to all their relatives as much as is left of their lives, AND GIVES BACK NO MORE! They come back—oh, not always even the body, not always even the blinded and the insane father or brother—but come back perhaps a hundred thou- sand, perhaps a million, perhaps two million dreary messages—dreary mes- sages that your father or your brother, or lover, or son, was dead many months ago! “Only the dreary message will come back to millions; this your government gives back to you of your lives, what is left. This and no more. ‘So we demand here and now and ® all the time, and we will continue to demand from this platform; from this roadside; from the housetop; friom the city; from the country, if need be from the federal penitentiary, or even from the gallows—for if you are to make that sacrifice, I can make any sacrifice, and I am not afraid—we will demand that this nation or the rulers of this nation, fearing now not so much for us and our country, as for yourselves, you rulers of this na- tion using this war now to multiply your millions of profits; we demand of Yyou, afraid@ of the autocracy of Ger- many, afraid of the European auto- cracies, if you fear that autocracy may come across the waters and rob you of the power to rob us; if you are afraid and you want us to go to war and give our lives, we say to you that you must, you must, send proof to us that you are sincere. You must make this arrangement, that when we give our lives, all that we have, this na- tion will take first of your profits and then of the property you have got, if the profit is not enough; and after the war is over we will give back, as you gve back of our lives, as much as is left, and no more.” ONLY 35 PER CENT GAIN Complaining that the Adamson law, which gives the eight-hour day, to rail- road men, had proved a burden upon the Missouri Pacific railroad, the Wall Street- Journal says that for three months from January 1 to March 31, the eight-hour day cost the road $312,- 000, while its net earnings for that month were only $4,594,000 or 35.7 per cent more for those three months than for the corresponding three months in 1916. i ADVERTISEMENTS FRECKLES Now Is the Time to .det Rid of Those Ugly Spots. He Sold a il Indorse Farmer Government Organized labor in North Dakota again (June 3) indorsed the Non- partisan league and renewed its alliance with the farmers for legislative action. At the sixth annual State Federation of Labor conference in Fargo, N. D., the North Dakota federation passed resolutions of indorsement and listened to addresses from farmers’ representatives. This indorsement proves the confidence and satisfaction felt by the working men with the first balf year of farmer government. Soon after the Nonpartisan league started, the North Dakota State Federation of Labor invited League representatives to set forth the aims of the farmers, and approved the program in resolutions and by, indorsing the League candidates. When the League candidates were overwhelmingly elected by the joint vote of organized labor and the organized farmers, President Samuel Gompers-of the American Federation of Labor sent congratu- lations. : S 2 ‘When, later, the farmer legislature met at Bismarck, organized labor for the first -time In the history of North Dakota sent representatives to “ the capitol to present the claims of labor. Throughout the session the League fathered and fought for labor legislation, and made the labor bills part of the League program. Labor representatives attended the “secret caucuses” of the League and addressed the members. The Fargo convention was a testimonial that the cordial relations are to be vigorously continued. W. E. Quigley attended as fraternal delegate of the Nonpartisan league, and fraternal delegates were there from the Minnesota Federation of Labor and the North Dakota union of the Society of Equity. Million Pounds Qur advertisers often say some very pleasant things about their advertising results and it all comes from the people on the farms all over the West. The Nonpartisan Leader appreciates very fully the cour- tesy shown by its 70,000 subscribers who always mention the Leader when they answer an ad. We have the most loyal list of subscribers ever gotten together. They are the buyers of the goods shipped into the West. They produce great wealth, _ and if one wants to get directly before the farmers in the Northwest they should investigate the circulation of the Non- partisan Leader. ¢ The Leader will put you in close touch with the people who buy the wide range of manufactured goods used on farms. : The letter below shows how one dealer sat at his desk and sold 1,000,000 pounds of twine. Gentlemen: 1 wish to enclose herewith my check for your bill against me for advertising space in the Leader, and I will say,in reference to this bill for advertising that it is a pleasure to pay it, because of the fact that there is no guess work or uncertainty about the value of the advertising. - In paying advertising billsgas a usual thing, a - person is more or less left in doubt as to the benefits derived from the advertising, but anyone who adver- tises in the Leader is not beset with any doubts about the question as to whether or not he has received value for his money. Leader advertisements have brought me good re- sults. I ran a very small ad in the Leader in refer- ence to binder twine, which put me in touch with enough customers to enable me to dispose of a mil- Hon pounds of binder twine in a very short time. Thanking you for past favors, I beg to remain, Yours very truly, LET’S JOIN FROM SHORE TO SHORE Ordway, South Dakota. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: This is a time when our organization is apt to be lost in the shuffle. Farmers of course are as patriotic as any, and are doing their best to keep the world from starving, and will shoulder their guns if needed. But they should not forget their organization, for it is needed now, and will be needed more than ever. ; It has very often been said that farmers were the backbone of the nation, but if so, it is apparently very badly disjointed and should -be connected up. So let us join the National Nonpartisan League from shore to shore and take our true place in the life of the nation, and force recog- nition to our wealth and numbers, Any blind man can see the farmers as a class are systematically ignored by the so-called ‘business world.” In a way they love us so long as we stay in our place. It is evident, howeyer, they do not consider our place is in the councils of the nation. 'We must have some organization we can all join, and show them that that is our place as much as it is anyone’s place. -1 see nothing better than the Nonpartisan League. in all states.
