On Thursday rumors of big export buying caused a sudden spurt, and wheat jumped five cents or better over the quotations of the pre- vious day. This continued for the next day, and it was reported that upward of 8,000,000 bushels of wheat and 5,000, 000 tushels of corn were bought during the two or three days. ; Whether this was mostly bullish rumor or actual fact, it not definitely certain, but it appears there ware for- eign buying. The freight embargo was responsible for stagnation in _move- ment of grain and flour, 'and to some traders it was inexplicable that wheat should continue to rise'with so little chance of getting it to seaboard or into ships for transfer to Europe. The cash market netted for the week a gain of five to seven cents, according to the'difference in gradés, much of it beiag buying by millers ‘outside of the Twin'Cities. The embargé condition is said'to''be improving, and it'is believ- ed that the cash wheat business may be improved in a few weeks, largely owing to the refusal of the Minnesota Railroad and Warehouse commission to grant the big demurrage charges, which railroads were asking. With this chance for making their equipment\ earn cnormous dividends while lying idle, railroads have shown a disposi- £ tion to improve switching operations and allow the cars to be emptied. LIVESTOCK SUMMARY Prices on fat cattle eased off during the week 10 to 15 cents on the South St. Paul livestock market, but there was not a heavy run of this class, and in feeders and stockers there is a posi- tive scarcity. On the lower grades of killing stuff, canners and cutters, there was no decline, females in this class ranging upward $1 from $4.25, and oxen $1 up from $3.75. Despite a strong run of hogs for the week, prices kept up, and were strong- er at the end than-at the beginning of the week. .On January 5 the yards had | the heaviest run since early in Decem- ber, over 18,000 head, with prices of about 200 pound weight cashing at 10 cents a pound on the hoof. Strong prices for lambs and sheep continued, but there were small. re- ceipts, and of these, a considerable portion was of feeder quality. The best lambs still draw $12 to $12.75 per 100. This is the light season for feeder, and stocker buying, but all that comes in of this quality in cattle or sheep is quickly bought by country feeders, un- less the packers can pay better prices.
