- National Nonpartzsan League Wanted North_Dakota Idea is the Right Way to Fight Privilege, Says Washington Citizen " W. H. Kaufman of Bellmgham, Wash.,, in a letter to The Public recently pro- posed a national nonpartisan league of persons of progressive thought. Ex- tracts from Mr. Kaufman’s letter follow: “Now that the Bell-Wether _has deserted his flock in the midst of a great and arid desert, it is time to re-{rropose a national nonpartisan league.- “Up to 1912 there were many local non-partisan - leagues doing effective work, and national non-partisan Anti- Saloon league, not having been deluded by: the beating of tom-toms, is still intact. i “In North Dakota, on July 19th; the ; Nonpartisan League: put across a com- - “ “plete ticket, with the exception of four candidates for the ‘legislature, its candi- " date for govefnor having received 1000 more votes ‘than all his opponents combined. - “Ordinarily the ‘machme beats us by concentrating all its strength on one-can- didate; while we radicals have from two to ten 'in the race. The non-partisan league furnishes a means for taking a prehmmary vote, say the first"Tuesday in May, precedmg an election; the can- didate who receives the greatest number. of Jeague votes will. then file for nomin- ation on' the Republican ticket in a Repubhcan distriet; or on the Democratic ticket in-a Democratlc district. The vot- ing is usually- done either largely or wholly by mail; at all events directly, as was done by the national Socialist party last spring. “By this preliminary election within the league we_ are able to unite on -one radical at the party pnmanes, in.states that have party primaries. “In 1912, in Wisconsin, Philip received the solid standpat Republican vote (with . doubtless a large contingent of standpat $600800000000000000¢ - - which there are sey calves. Prater of Burleigh cofinty, who asserts a daily paper devoted to the farmers cause “would be one of the best , things that: ever took place in North Dakota.” 1 vofe, Philip would not have been govern- or of Wisconsin. “Here in Whatcom county, Washing- ton, up to 1912, we had a very effective non-partisan league. It was so small we did not have a formal vote; but we were able to have only one radical for each 1mportant office; and ~we elected -the two superior judges, the county attorney, the: county board of commlssuoners and the board of equalization and the assessor. “The fight that is' on in America is - neither as to candidates nor as to planks . in' a platform. The fight is between decency and national debauchery; between justice and legalized robbery; between Mammon and Man. “Millions of voters are weary of party shibboleths; ~weary of clannishness; weary of . platforms and Contracts with the People. “Go to any legxsl.ature and you will find two groups. Ownership advocates; those advocating election reforms and 'a dozen other issues—all either dlrectly or indirectly attacking nuearned 'incomes—and all these men soon learn to ‘stand together. - “Opposed to this.group is another well - defined group composed of Traction, Tim- ber, Oil, Fisheries, Banking, Boommg—-- and other advocates of unearned incomes —and all these men stand together.” s+ New rombers Carburetor forCORDS NowReady n:ud: sought for 1 AModaIT lfiFord ©arT!
