The selection of candidates by the convention could not have been fairer or more representative than it was and there was ample discussion of quali- fications of-all nominees. i : SR Take for instance Burdick, whose indorsement as candidate for governor some of the controlled papers claimed a good per cent of the delegates would favor. His name was in nomination and he did not get a vote. An illustration | With success for the League. Ardock, N. D. of the truthful (?) news we get in some of the daily papers. JOHN . B. TREACY . - All for the Cause FARMERS ARE “TIRED” Normanden’s Abuse of League Lead- ers Disgusts Its Readers Folowing is a letter ffom a League member printed in.the Normanden of " Grand Forks: . Mr. Editor: - I am getting tired of all the foolish- ness which the Normanden is invent- ing about the Farmers’ League and its leaders and I think perhaps it may ease my mind to have my views expressed. It was indeed too bad that Townley and the farmers did not ask the Nor- manden how they should organize and whom they should recommend for the candidates. We should have ‘made the Normanden ‘editorial staff our leaders, as they see fit to give us advice. . . The Normanden “harps se much on the string” that it is-being placed in the same class with the Grand Forks Herald, the Fargo Courier-News and ‘the Bismarck Tribune and contends’ that it is always at swords points' with the Grand Forks Herald. But I have .seen dogs and cats, that fight as such, but have eaten out of the same dish _when their master stood éver them. The worst is that nothing more can bé said of the League’s candidates ~ than that they are farmers, That segi(rlns to be the worst that can be said. I have talked with almost' every farmer in this community and I have heard of no man who has any faith in what the Normanden and. other Gang papers say against the League. As I am, a farmer and my time for writing is limited I shall be compelled to close with the wish that my letter may not land in the wastepaper basket but find a place in the paper. On the front page it-can naturally not appear for- this is reserved for the Interests that oppose the League, and if there is one out of thousands who ‘deserts the League ranks, and writes regarding it, then it appears “upon the front sheet of the Norman- den with headlines in large type. Yes, I actually believe that if the members continue to desert in the numbers that they have done hereto- fore, there will not be many remaining after a couple of thousands of years, that is, if no one joins ‘in the mean- time.—T. L. GRINDBERG. REVOLT IN ULSTER It’s Possible to Make Hoare Read “ O’Hare,” But It’s Wrong Editor Nonpartisan Leader: After sitting down with pen in hand to write you regarding my stay at Fargo and in flowery speech tell you how I con- sidered you above par, then for you to come out and sign the name Frank O’Hare to it. ' There isn’t an English- man in all Ireland with such a name.. Please ‘do not let it happen again. Such remarks'as I ‘have read in opposing political papers are in many instances a result of selfish and spite- ing. When a man exposes - wrong doings and is ridiculed because of his' doing: s0, the one, or the paper - that does ‘the ridiculing is stooping very. low to uphold ‘the wrong in this - o tllxjev paper?that cast: slur-- ' way, as did ring. remarks at one.of the League speakers . who . mentioned the way - liguor was used by officials’ at Bis- marck. To slur at: a man for a political reason can be overlooked: but to see a man who poses ‘as a “Rev- . erned ‘gentleman” ' 'through papers make light of the man who opposes’ wrong doing,: must surely not be sincere but prejudiced. - = 2 We can at least be manly enough to say, ¢ Old man, you are right, the wrong is there. We will figght to- ether even though you be a six fioua‘r sucker.” ©1 o 0 % They knock the leaders. Let them knock. The maiden dollars are danc- ing before these men and they will offer up the heads of Townley, Wood and all they can find who will oppose them. ] : If the One Great Example of men was upon earth today and happened Yo be at the head of the Nonpartisan . Lpague, there would be a ten times higher cross erected than the one on Calvary—and the crucifixion would g0 on. It is not that the leaders are to be feared. They fear honesty in govern- ment and you can only kill it by strik- ing the head. d Why" gentlemen, it is none of your ‘business - what “became of my six dollars. . Perhaps Townley will take . a trip through Europe with it. Even if he does, they may get six or more next year. : Perhaps the six dollars will take a bunch of farmers on a trip to Bis- marck ‘with Frazier in 'the lead,— F. ‘A. HOARE. . : A G GLOBE TROTTER CALLED .. Ho CAdas 5 And Then This Editor Flopped—. Which is Peculiar, Sayg'flanson Editor Nonpartisan Leader: “The editor of the Mercer County Star, who until recently was profuse in his commendation of < the Nonpartisan League movement and the principles for which it stands, suddenly flops and assumes to appoint himself as guard- ian of the farmers, as shown in his editorial in his issue of ' April 21, which reads: “The big five, the heads of the Non- partisan®League, are making a dismal failure. of their political program. . Their own past is their first stumbling block and the fact that they did not nominate. U. L. Burdick, the choice of their convention for governor, is the second. - Had Burdick gotten their indorsement as the delegates wished - and hoped for the sailing of the League would have been much brighter than it is: today.” - Now it is pecular that Brother “Schlep”“did not see this until after North Dakota’s most -popular’ globe- trotting politician had spent'a day in- the little burg of Hazen, and also eculiar that the characters of the ; eaders of the Nonpartisan League ‘have only just been discovered, and very peculiar that his tirade should be concluded thusly: “Too bad that a useful organization like -this should fall into such unworthy hands,” with- - out directing the reader to data. giv- ing’ the offenses of which the Star intimates the “big five” are guilty. The only crime- we can charge the ‘ Nonpartisan e leaders with is failing to have a few millians, to in- fluence legislation instead of small donations from: farmers, whereas the multi-millionaires already have the scash to attempt to influence the farm- ers’ vote through the editors of a few dishonest papers, who are:evidently. well paid to build up a sentiment to vogue. loyal - the country press are as'a whole, advising the farmers to organ- ize for 21 straight’ months and how organization is'effected for the better- ment of the masses how readily a “percentage " of the same press ‘see - their way ‘clear 'to attack - most venomously the leaders: of the organ- ization, if not the principles for which they stand?
