It is the highest dam in the world. It is the only one of its kind constructed in the his- tory of irrigation. The total cost to build it is $5,000,000, approximate- ly $2,5600,000 under -the ~estimates.’ Four years were occupied in erecting it and it stands completed a year in advance of the eitimated time. Credit for this is given the United States Reclamation Service, which controlled and, supervised- the work. To Irrigate an Ewmpire. Over 20,000 men all told were em- ployed on the dam. The dam reached a height of 348.5 feet, tapering to a 16-foot crown. Th2 concrete in the dam if load- ed on a wagon train allowing twenty feet to each team and wagon would reach from San Francisco to New York arnd double back to Cleveland. Eighteen Miles of Water. The rezervoir formed bechind it is eighteen miles long, the water in it reaching a maximum depth of 260 feet, enough to flood the city of Bos- ton with eight feet of water. There is tributary to the reservoir - 3,000;- 000,000 feet of timber. It will take fifty. years -to lift it over the dam and drop through a cement chute to the river bzlow.
