M Gold is steady at 134} The exports of specie to-day were as follows : City f New York, $20,000; Ville de Paris, $370,883; Bremen, $170,000; making a total'of $569,883. The financial gale which has wrecked and damaged #o many operators in Stocks has scarcely affected the quotation of gold. Money is in good demand at 7 per cent in the face of a largely decreased borrowing. A good many stocks which have caused their owners much trouble to earry, are now held quietly by persous to whom they are pledged, and who would become their owners wpon any further decline at the Exchange through a pressure for money. Commercial bills pase at 74@8 for best, and 9@10 for good names. The business of the Sub-Treasury was : Receipts, $2588,530 74—for Customs, $306,000; Payments, §1,149,202 3; Balance, $108,586,410 63—Gold Notes, 360,000 Freights are better. Banks keep- ing brokers’ accounts are’simply clearing-houses for such dealars, and by certifyiug their checks as at present create what is as much currency as their own notes, and violate the law. The most charitable ex- cuse to be found for this violation is in the fact that a large majority of bank officers under the National system manage their b V-im».fl as ander the the old State laws, and only ver the real meaning of the Act under which they do business when it is foreed upon their attention by such losses as were experi- enced this week. Turning 10 the condition of the bauks of the city, it is seen that they have made an expansion of sixteen millions in their Jouns, of twelve and a quarter millions in cir- culation, upon an increase of deposits of two and a quarter milliqps, and a decrease of ten and ahalf millions in legul tenders. It is apparent that the rate of money and the posstion of the banksdo not favor speciatiou for an advan The financial operation of the Treasury has ceased to be expansive, and though yet incapable of sharp contraction, isstill in- sidiously moving toward the gold basis. Many of the most fashionable speenlative shares are now higher than last year, npon what substantial basis it is not easy to state with precision.
