The Bulls argue that the fall has lost ite force, and that a sharpreaction is again in order. This may oceur, but in view of {be high prices etill maintained, it is very doubtful whether any permenent advance can be engineered. Just now the Treasury De- partment is not pursuing a policy favorable to specula- tions for an advauce end at any material iwprovement. Sales to elose out will bo numerous enough to break the market eeriously. Cleveland and Toledo is unsettied under reports of tales of Bonds further tban wanted for the building of its new line; within eightmonths $600,000 has been gold and $800,000 ip disidends paid. They are disproved by the fact that sound roads are redueing their dividends. The Pennsylvania Central has reduced its semi-annual payment to 4 per cent, and its mansgers do mot expect soon to increase it. Some of the oldest Ohio roads bave reduced their payments, and the maunger of one of the most important Western ronds states thet railroad balance-sheets at New-Years will be worse than even prudent people expected. The Commercial Advertiser says: The affairs of the Atlantic Meil Steamship Company exeite considerable remarks. No satisfactory explanation is given of the closing of the Company's office, and the relesse of the clerks “on a day's holiday, " and the act of course gives rise 1o all sorte of surmnises. This morning a report s current that stock has becn taken from the Company's safe for tho purpose of making deliveries counected with tie shert contracts re cently watured. To-day, the offiee of the f‘ompun( remaine closed. In the absence of the new President, Mr. Wheeler, the Vice-President has assumed temporary control. so far as to dis- York agents of the Company from farther service, and .g{mm new agents, Mr. Wheeler is expeoted to arrive by the Havana stewmer. @ue yesterday, when further | Jight upon the condition in which the retiring mansgement has | Jet: the Company » affuirs may be expeeted, The Louisrille Journal of Monday says: ‘With the decline in provisions has followed a r-uv-r-umdm, decline for hogs in all the markets, and prices in the Western market now range from a6 for good heavy averages, Our Tarket is visibly influenced by these radical changes. and most articles are nomins) with only » moderste demand existing, from the city and jobbing trade, sufficient ouly for the iwmedi ate wants of consumiers or the filing of such orders as are on the market. The Cincinnati Commercial of Tuesday remarks: There i8 no material change in the money market from the close of the week, but borrowers find gradually inereasing diff- culties in the way of pegotisting loans. Currency balances are aiready below an easy working average, aud in anticipation of the wanta of the pork trade, bunkers are very cautious about increasing their discount lines by the purchase of loug As yet very little mouey, «mr‘-mmly Das “been abactied l‘.{l the pork trade, but the time is now close at band when it w! require 150,000 per day to pav for hogs. Aud it is s peculiarity of this business that nearly afl the money for hogs in_car ried directly into the interior, u.d takos fully sixty days to make the turn. Bankers have large balances in New-York, where 4@5 9 cent interest is paid, and as there is 10 demand for call loans here, they are bringing out currency only as required by daily wants, and consequently there has not as yet been o heavy Westward flow of greenbacks, but the volume must in- crease for several weeks to come. Hogs are selling at equal to 16 per bead, and the crop in the West will be from half a mil- liou to one million larger thau last year. The smountof cur- rency, therefore, that will be required to move the crop may readily be estimated, end in waking up the estimate it is not 10 Pe forgotten that money is scarce thronghont the West. An- other feature of our money market is a deficiency in collections. Country merchaats are payiag up very slowly, aid city jobbers re commpelied 0 DoFrow 1 orier o meet their own bills, which are matoriog.
