I Horace Greeley should announce himself as satisficd of the soundness of this claim, that single fact would covstitute an opoch in the movement. Then he would call upon tho National @overnment to teach this philosophy through the example af- forded by its employés in the Government works. Mo man who loves his race could rosist tho temptation to amnounce so important a trath, We understand the fallacy of assuming that “ Lle who pants, tlls and gathers a field of oorn, is entitle] to every err and erery stulk of it.” We know that mere muscular ls! 0¢ would never creato much wealth— Sbat sowe must mako thinking and experimeating, teachlng and writing, golug and coming, speaking aud singing, &e., apechalty, aud that the worll is the richr as well as Dotter for it. The reports in relation to the Bank of the Metropolis at Washington have disturbed lenders in some degree, and rumor was busy with reports of trouble with correspondents of the bank in this and other cities. The determination of the Government to withdraw from pet National banks the public moneys is a step in the right direction and will secure something more than safety to the Treasury. It will force these institutions into more quiet ways, and take from speculators the facilitics they now eujoy for inflating values. Congress ought at once to go a step further, and dircet the Assistant-Trcasurer st New-York to or gauize o Sorting Bureau of National Currency, and send howe everything not redecmable in this city. As the banks are now managed, there is practically ne re- demption for the majority, and the currency of an ex- ploded “institution” commands greenbacks more readily thau the uotes of a living bank. Sorting should not be done by an association of banks, but should be taken in hand by the Government. Any bank showing sensitive- ness at being asked for greenbacks should have its cireuls- tion constantly pressed Lome until itis what it preteuds o be, ““ as good as greenbacks.” The T'imes coutinues its abuse of the only person will. ing to keep tho Erie Railway out of the hands of a Re. ceiver, aud says, in defense of its articlo of Saturday, that “the statement bore upon its face the impress of official authority, and we may as well now say that the facts were derived from the President of the Company and three of his beet Directors—Gen.
