“tishing every spring. 10 NEW YORK HER. ALD, ASHORE NEAR OCEAN BEACH. THE DARK HOMEWARD BOUND fTRANDED DUR- ING A DENSE FOG—CAPTAIN AND CREW RES- CUED, (BY TELEGRAPH TO THE HERALD.) Loxe Braxcn, March 21, 1879. The bark Homeward Bound, of Sewsport, Me., Captain David Merriman commanding, thirty-seven days out from Amsterdam in ballast for New York, stranded near Ocemn Beach, about one mile north of Life Saving Station No. 8, during a dense fog at four o'clock this morning. The vessel was discovered by one of the life saving patrol, who, on seeing a rocket fired from the bark, immediately answered by show- ing his Coston light, after which ho notified the crew, who appeared on the ground with the lifeboat at a quarter to five o'clock A. M, The captain and crew, consisting of twelve men, all told, were landed with- out serious difficulty or delay, Captain Merriman, when found by the Henan reporter, was in the vicinity of the wreck in com- yany with the pilot, Captain D. Beebe, of pilot boat No. 7, and Captain Pitney Curtis, agent for the Coast Wrecking Company. When interrogated by the Henatp reporter he made the following state- ment:—‘We left Amsterdam February 12 in ballast, consigned to Carver & Barnes, New York. We ex- perienced heavy weather throughout the voyage and took a pilot aboard yesterday afternoon about @ quarter before six o'clock. We were heading west by north, half a point north, and supposed that we were forty miles from the Sandy Hook light- ship. I did not give the pilot charge, as we were not yet in the pilot ground, A heavy fog settled down over us all night, and this morning it was very thick and what I would call a black fog. We sounded at twelve o'clock tast night, and getting twenty-six fathoms, continued on our course, thinking that we were twenty miles off shore. A light easterly wind prevailed throughout the night until we struck, about four o'clock this morning, when we came ashore under full sail at ebout five knots an hour. Thad ae re the order to heave the lead when she stran All I can lay it to is that my chro- nometer must have got out of order. When we stranded I saw lights on the beach coming from opposite directions, We set off a rocket and were auswered from the shore by a flash light, when we made hasty preparations to leave the ship. But by the time the lifeboat arrived, which about an hour after we struck, we found that there was no danger of tho bark’s breaking, so we took our time and were all landed in four trips. The bark is about fourtecn years old, and was built at Bucksport, Me., 1864, and is owned by James Pendleton and others of Sears- ort, Me. Lown @ sixteenth part of her. Do not now if she is insured or not. The Homeward Bound rates as Al’; and registers 561 tons, and, I suppose, is worth 0 or $8,000, The bark struck bow on, but immediately swung around, so that her stern lies on the beach, with her bow headed southeast.” 2 “1 GO A FISHING." Coptain Pitney Curtis, agent for the Coast Wreck- mpany, said to the reporter, ‘Although this crew did thelr duty this morning, the keeper of No. 8 was off at Weehawken shad fishing. He goes off every spring and pretends that he has o permit from the Secretary of the Treasury. He came down in the same train that you did.” Superintendent Havens was at the station house, and after Captain Ludlow arrived they were cloreted together in the boat room some time, When the reporter lett he was unable to speak with Keeper Ludiow. Several fishermen, who were Btanding on the beach, stated that the Captain went He sometimes, they said, comes home on Saturday night and remains over Sunday, going off the first of the week sgain. THE WRECKERS ON THE SCENE. The Coast Wrecking Company’s steamer Relief ar- rived at the wreck about four o’clock to lay anchor and cables. A boat, manned by surfmen started out to assist in bringing the cable in to the bark, but as the ses was rising rapidly Captain Curtis said it would be impossible to work on the vessel, and or- dered the men back before they had crossed the bar. As the bark’s crew had been put on board after breakfast, where they remained during the day, end as thero was no work to be after the wrecking compan: bis men ashore, Captain steering car of his boat and went off and brought the crew 2 shore in a creditable manner. But as the boat struck the beach two of the seamen in their haste attempted to jump out as the wave receded, but were immediately caught by the next breaker ‘and carried mto the sea, where they were rescued by some of the life saving crew. Should the weather favorable an ose wen ne sete to lay the cables to-morrow. seid that he did fod ates teres. as eo ee ae Kod gave offshore pilotage, ‘was forty mil off the lightship. ONLY ONE SAVED. Information was received in Newark, N. J., yester- day, that a boat belonging to the bark Morning Star, which was wrecked off the South Carolina coast on March 13, had been picked up by the bark Sea Bird, of Baltimore. In the boat were four seamen, one ot whom is Barney Galligan, of Newark. The rest of the Morning Star's crew, eleven all told, are believed to have been lost. CHARGED WITH MURDER. Sr. Louis, Mo., March 21, 1879, John Lanham, alias Charles Johnson, was arrested last night and placed in jail. He is charged with shooting and killing an actress on the stage of a theatre in San Antonio, Texas, in July last; also with ‘wounding two men at the same time. (BY TELEGRAPH TO THE HERALD.) Rrcumoxp, Va., March 21, 1879. The trial of Miss Amelia Linkham for murder, which was to have taken place at Lumberton, N. C., this week, has been continfied until the next term of the Court. Miss Linkham, it will be remembered, shot and killed her all leged seducer, Edward Hart- man, 8 Baltimore drammer, at Lumberton, on the 24th of October last. She was enceinte and Hart- ‘man had promised to marry her. AN ORANGE TRIUMPH. Montrear, Que., March 21, 1879, ‘The Harney-Ruseell shooting trial at Sweetsburg resulted to-day in a verdict of not guilty. Russell ‘was carried from the Court by his Orange brethren emid great enthusiasm. AN OUTRAGEOUS ASSAULT. Wasurnatox, March 21, 1879. In the Police Court of this District to-day Patrick McNamara, George Lowry and James Shugrue were srraigned on the charge of assault and battery upon Miss Maggie M. Chaney last Tuesday night. Miss Chaney, at the time under the escort of Mr, John T. Lighter, was proceeding to her home on Capitol Hill when the accused, with other parties, made an as- seult upon the lady and a i Mr. Lighter wan severely attacked by three of the party, while others seized the young lady, and, throwing her upon the ground, assaulted her iu the most ontrage- ous manuer. ‘The young woman in giving her testimony to-day tompletely down and was taken sobbing into om Rig paced room, where she fainted. There was great indignation in the court. The prisoners were vent to jail. OE. Sih A TRAVELLING FORGER. Covumnra, 8. C., March 21, 1879, James F. He is travellin; with » young lady represented as his daughter, an is said to be a most accomplished scoundrels AMUSEMENTS. “PAUST” AT THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC. Signor Prapoli enor Del P wr Glass ignor Franceschi ween hte Marsheviia “Faust” was given last night at the Academy for the last time this season, It was announced some days ago that last night would also be the final ap- pearance of Mile. Hauk before her departure for Europe; but we are now informed that our charm- ing country woman is to be heard at least once more in “Carmen,” and probably in a new réle, But of this more in good time, The performance of ‘Faust’ list evening was in many respects a memorable one. Miss Hauk’s Margherita is an exquisite piece of dramatic und artistic portraiture. She is for the time being the sweet, suffering Margherita, as completely as in “Carmen” she is the wild, impetuous and saucy gypsy. In this self-sacrifice, in the truthfulness and naturalness of her acting, Miss Hauk’s greatest charm lies. In, the spinning ced Nerd gave us o dreamy piotusel | delicious reyerie, that charmed her avdience irresistibly. The Jewel song was given with perfect artistic and vocal finish. Every phrase ‘gave evidence not only of conscientious study, but of a thorough comprehension of the Saree it Margherita, the simple Germangirl, whose heart went out so readily at tne nrst call, » oe ig Frapolit, Was aniannes not im good voice last evening, Miss Hauk gave a poctic and emotional rendering of that sw: cetest of operatic love scenes, where in the “silence, soft and sweet, her heart re- joices with a bliss unconfessed,” and she has learned “what the ‘small secret voice’ is that murmurs so sweetly in her breast." What heauty is contained in this scene, where word and music are blended so completely, “as they should. be, the sister and the brother!’ With the {sweet throbbings ot her own heart, Margherita sees “the leaves all tremble and dance, and move.” It would be a gratetul task to dissect Miss Hauk’s renderin the character of Margherita at groater length, oA the lateness of the hour at which the performance closed prevents our saying much now. Signor Fra- olli sang Faust charmingly, notwithstanding the Tact. that he was ont ot voice. Signor Del Puente’s Mephistopheles was yocally satisfactory, but he was much too serious all through. The visible in- visible gentleman should take more delight in his devilish work,” Signor Galassi sang the part of Valentino, and sang it, of course, with great effect. Mme. Pisani took. the part of Siebel, and very satis: factorily. The house was filled with a brilliant audience. Miss Hauk was the recipient of a double recall after the third act, when she received an en- thusiastic greeting from the entire house. MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC NOTES. Yr. Hermann Linde, the Shakespearean reader, leaves for Europe on the steamship Germania to- day, Tho attraction at the Academy of Music this after- noon will be “I Puritani,” in which Signori Cam- panini, Galassi, Mme. Gerster and other prominent members of the company will appear. The performance at the Lyceum Theatre this even- ing will commence with two comedies by the French Company—“Le Bonhomme Jadis’’ and ‘Monsieur Vaau Cercle.” Mmes. Desirée, Blanche, Hermant, 4 MM. Eugene Moreau, Emile Henriot and Paul Juignet are in the casts. After which will fol- low “H. M. S. Pinafore” in English by Mr. Harvey’s company. Agrand receptiog and ball will be given at the Academy of Music on Easter Monday, April 14, by Palestine Commandery, No. 18, Knights Templars. Bernstein’s full orchestra and Grafulla’s Seventh Reginient Band will furnish the dance and promen- ade music. Among other features will be an exhibi- tion drill of the Grand Commandery. It is likely to prove an interesting event in Masonic circles. ‘A proposal has been made to Prince Bismarck by an eminent financier to substitute a duty on pianos for the proposed duty on corn. “We understand,” says an English weekly, “that this proposal is warmly supported by that very large section of the public which considers music to be only the least Gisagreeable form of noise, and is anxious to check, orat any rate to tax, the almost universal habit of making every child learn the piano and practise sev- eral hours a day for many'years, whether it possesses any musical talent or not.” If the weather is p!easant the matinées to-day bid fair to be well attended. “Pinafore” will be per- formed at the Standard, Broadway, Lyceum, San ¥Franciaco Minstrel Theatre, Tony Pastor’s and the Olympic, “Engaged” at the Park, at Wittack’s, “A Celebrated Case’ House, “The Bankers Daughter” at the Unior Square, “Thro’ the Dar! tt the Fifth Avenuee, “The Black Crook” at Niblo’ “Red Riding Hood” at the Aquarium, ‘The Octo- roon” at the Bowery and “The Mulligan Guard Ball’ at the Theatre Comique. Chacun 4 sun goiit, There has been an interesting musical quarrel in Berlin with reference to Rubinstein’s opera ‘‘Fera- mors,” which was to be produced at the Royal Opera House, An incident which occurred at the dress re- hearsal delayed the piece. The prima donna, Mme. Mallinger, refused to sing a certain portion of the bride's dance. The composer insisted upon her sing- ing it. A quarrel took place and Rubinstein ended by leaving the house and declining to conduct. It appears that the portion in question was struck out with the approval of the imperial and Royal director of the Opera, who, however, had omitted to arrange matters with the composer. However, it is fully in- tended to perform the opera whether Rubinstein agrees to conduct it personally or not. The concert at Steinway Hall this evening, to be given by Mr. Christian Fritsch, promises to be one of the best of the season. The programme is varied and attractive, and comprises the names of the following artists:—Mrs. Imogene Brown, Mrs. Florence Rice- Knox, Miss Urchs, Mme. L. Grcessler Heim, Mr. A. E. Stoddard, Mr. Prehn, Mr. H. Bersin, Mr. 8. B. Mills, Mr. L. G. Kapp, Mr. E. Agramonte, Mr. Charles Werner, Mr. C. Walter, Mr. F. Brandeis and Mr. George Colby. Mr. Fritsch is not only one of the best of our tenors, but he has so frequently and generously tendered his services without charge in the many concerts given for charitable purposes during the last two or three years that he deserves a substantial recognition of the same atthe hands of the public to-night. MISS LENNOX'S READINGS. Miss Adelaide Lennox opened last evening a course of readings which promises to prove very popular by attractive. Last evening's selections, jothin, to Wear,” ‘The Maniac,” “The Va powers Betas and I Are Ont” and other pieces, showed Miss Len- nox to Lg, earn of high powers of elocution and no little matic talent. This afternoon and even- ing Miss Lennox will read again. TENNESSEE'S DEBT. LEGISLATIVE PROPOSITION TO SETTLE AT FORTY CENTS AND FOUR PER CENT. (BY TELEGRAPH TO TUE HERALD.) Nasuvi.e, March 21, 1879, After a discussion of ten days the Senate to«lay finally passed, by a vote of 13 to 12, a bill to adjust the State debt at forty cents on the dollar and four per cent interest, to be Ldn Sage for ratification to a vote of the people September 4. ane -night the House passed “the bill on its first reading. The following despatch from New York was read in both houses to-night: To tho SrEAgKE of the Tennesseg Sonate :— Please read to the Senate of Tennossoe this our protest agninet that » compromise with t © usxumpt the ‘iol: No offer of settlement other than the award, f interest, #1 per cont with the bondholders at the mittes meeting. mt GENE KELLY, Chatrman, The Coe award was sixty cents on the dollar and six per cent interost. LOW CREDIT MEN STUBBORN. Kelly's despatch aroused the greatest indignation among the low credit men, who swear they will not vote a compromise, and its defeat seems to be tnevit- able, At the adjournment of both houses they gathered in kuots about the halls and excitedly disenased the proposition. They asserted they would vote for a forty cent proposition, but nothing higher than that rate. With almost, the entire State press in favor of main- taining the State credit and constantly urging the Legislature to a settlement, the low credit faction have become demoralized and will use the ees | of Kelly asa pretext for non-vtion, The republicans and State credit democrats twit the low credit men with “I told yor s An exciting session is ex- pected in the House to-morrow.
