FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Review of the Week---An Active and Weak Stock Market, THE MONEY AND EXCHANGE MARKETS, investment Securities---Government, State and Railroad Bonds. NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, MARCH 3, 1879—TRIPLE Prime commercial paper was in good demand at 336 to 445 percent. Foreign exchange was very firm and the rates are up to about the specie shipping point. The posted rates are 4.863; and 4.803; for bankers’ prime long and demand sterling. Govern- ment bonds were firm and active, although large lots of bonds likely to be called are being returned here from abroad, The Secretary made another call dur- ing the week for $20,000,000 of the five-twenties of 1867. In State bonds the principal dealings were in Louisiana consols and District of Columbias, The former were again lower, and the latter, after advanting sharply on the proposal to make them receivable like governments, as security for bank cir- culation, slightly declined. Matters seem to be stillin avery unsettled and unsatisfactory state in Richmond regarding the legislation concerning the FINANCIAL.
