FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Active and Weak. Government Bonds Firm, States Lower and Railroads Generally Weak. The Public Debt and Bank Statements. Money on Call 8 a 4 Per Cent. sag g Sarunpay, march 1-6P. M. Spring, which is popularly but erroneously sup- posed to make its advent to-day, and which a good old bishop, much more verdant than the season itself, poetized as an epoch “which unlocks the flowers,” was chiefly greeted in financial circles this morning by the unlocking of a very large bag of Delaware and Lackawanna shares and the spilling of its contents upon the market. The price, which had opened at 50, speedily receded under offerings of long stock, and in the end guve way under a perfect stampede to 4534, which were at onco the closing and the lowest figures of the day. Transactions were enormous, and were accompanied by a steady drag down of values which could only havo been created by the marketing of long stock for the accaunt of one or more prominent operators. Withal there was some mystery as to the identity of the dramatis persona in the transaction, which every broker had his own solution for.
