A vast crowd collected on the Real Estate Exchange yesterday to witness the sale of the greater portion of the Windsor Hotel. Among those present were many large property owners, hotel keepers and brokers, The property, which is described as the “soven story brick building, with twenty years’ lease from April 29, 1871, of the plot of land 200.10x140, on the ¢ side of Fifth avenue, block front between Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh streets, ground rent $19,400 per year, sub- ject to back ground rent of $4,850 now duo,’’ was sold in f6reclosuro at the suit of Peter Goelet and others against Johu T. Daly and others to satisfy a judgment of $130,000, Tho sale was under the di- rection of the Sheriff, whose description and terms were read by the auctioneer, when several gentlemen inquired if the plaintiff’ would give possession if tho property was sold. One of the Goelets who was present retused to give any answer, and bid $100,000; then $150,000 tind $200,000 were bid. The property advanced by 5,000 bids to $220,000, and by $500 and $1,000 bids to $351,000, at which price it was knocked downto a young man apparently stranger to all present. . GOING FOR A CHECK, Proceeding to the auctioncer’s «tand he gavo thi name of F, W. Barker and requested helf an hour's grace in which to go to a bank and secure a certifiet check for the ten per cont deposit required. The re- wt being granted by Under Sherif Cummings the stranger disappeared in the company of George W. Belden, ot Syracuse. Great curiosity was felt as to who he was and whom he represented, bots were even offered that he would not return, When the half-hour had expired the Sheriff. ordered the prop- erty resold, The auctioneer mounted the stand, when: Mr. B, McMahon, on Cogn of wixteen bondholders, in- sisted as nearly ail the bidders had disappeared, that tho sale should go over. While entering his protest there was a stir in the rear of the denye crowd, and in rushed Mr. Barker, Ureathlees and holding aloft two certified checks. His appearance was yreoted with a round ot cheers, Right behiad him came Mr. Belden, who took the checks aud banding them up to the auctioneer completed the sale.
