inline — FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL ‘ “The Stock Market Less Ac- tive and Weak. Goverment Bonds Steady, States Dull and Railroads Irregular. Money on Call Easy at 2 a 3, Closing at 2 a 21-2 Per Cent, —_——e——_ Watt STREET, Monpay, Feb, 3—6 P. M. Asa natural reaction of a bull market pushed to extremes we find a state of things which has ren- dered prices inactive, transactions fewer and the in- terest in stock transactions greatly lessened, From something like 400,000 shares per day the aggregate of diurnal dealings has been reduced to 150,000 shares or thereabouts and popular interest has fallen off ac- cordingly. Of this latter element there was little to be seen in to-day’s market, and, as a matter of fact, little of professional interest either. A sort of Scylla and Charybdis condition of things seems to exist which makes navigation dangerous for both bulls and bears. In other words, a good deal of hesitation ex- ists as to whether the 1ong side or the short side of the market is more promising of success, It is whispered to-day that certain street celebrities have banded themselves upon the short side with the avowed in- tention of depressing prices. At the same time its rumored that equally powerful factions have com- bined to advance them. Between the two the great bulk of operators, who care for neither bull nor bear, provided a profit can be extracted, is inclined to remain idle, Bereft of this very material support the market remained idle also, and quotations as a necessity declined. Excepting spasmodic reactions there was a tendency to lower prices the day through, the pressure being chiefly observable in Erie and the coal shares. ‘To account for the depression in Erie we have the report of a serious falling of in the earnings for tho last three weeks in January, and in the coal shares the be- Wef that prices are made as good es they appear, simply becauso they are held up by the main strength of speculative operators, without the least regard to values. Taken for all in all, the market at the end was to be regarded as more bearish than bull- ish—at least prices tended that way. Even should this impression become a fact, it by no means docs away with the latent and generally expressed opinion that the eventual course of prices will tend to higher figures and that the recent advance in the better class of securities will be repeated with even more advantageous resulis. ‘Lo-day’s market was left to itself, being almost free from rumor, It is reported that the London Stock Exchange inclined to fight shy of Jay Gould, and that in conse- quence the Union Pacific stock will be stricken from the list of quotable properties. No evidence of this intention is as yet perceptible upon our mar- ket. Congress employed itself to-day in tinkering the Pension bill, Whether the $10,000,000 required for payment of arrears should be drawn from the ‘Treasury or be obtained by the issue of 4 per cent bonds was left to the proper committee for report. In either case this sum would be an addition to the amount of money seeking investment and, so far as it goes, a support to the stock market. ‘The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks at theo New York Stock Exchange to-day were as follows Spe cake a ing, Highest, Lowest: Closing.
