FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Review of the Week-—-A Very Active and Ex- citing Speculation in Stocks. THE MONEY AND EXCHANGE MARKETS, Watt Srreer, Sunpay, Feb, 2, 1879, ‘The familiar saying that “it never rains but it pours” seems to be quite as applicable to business upon the Stock Exchange as to atmospherical phe- nomena, The drought which has for so long period dried up the business of commission prokers and reduced the Stock Exchange to the condition of @ financial Desert of Sahara, appears at last to have yielded to a perfect down pour of activity. Such, at least, is the presumption afforded by the testimony of the past week, which, for its volume of business end startling variation in prices, has not been paral- leled since the palmy times of the war. In those ‘halcyon days tho humblest of brokers had a soul above lager (though it has come down to it since), and the bare possibility of a return to a period of “champagne and chicken” has restored a degree of cheerfulned™ to the faces of board members which has long been absent. The week just passed has been characterized by violent changes in prices, ® free realization of profits, # natural decline in quotations and the establishment of some feeling of ‘uncertainty as to what the course of the market is to be in the immediate future. Of course the over- Banguine, who believed that the dismal record of the last five years was to be blotted out in a month’s time, have been disappointed, Those who expected to plunge into prosperity as one takes a “‘header” in swimming bath are inclined to growl because they have experienced an inevitable chill, put by those who have anticipated the reaction and wisely regard it as @ healthy check to a speculation which had taken the bit in its teeth the set back is received as both natural and necessary. The bull movement, which had been kept atfevor heat for a couple of weeks, received its first antiphlogistic treatment on Tuesday through free sales of the Northwestern common stock, The very serious decline which ensued quickly affected the rest of the list, and a general breakdown in prices followed. Jay Gould, of course, got the credit or discredit (as regarded from a bear or bull potnt of view) of the operation; but it is not to be denied that the invitation to attack was given him by the bulls themselves, who, by distributing pool holdings, haa weakened the market and deprived it of support. ‘The depression was succeeded by a sharp rally and a subsequent downward turn, which brought matters at the close of the week to the state of uncertainty referred to. Diagnosing the market carefully, how- ever, the conclusion is arrived at that the pools, in parting with their stocks, have passed them over to strong outside parties, who, in a majority of cases, have bought to hold; that the amount of stocks upon thé street has been materially reduced; that the liquidation has been a profitable one to both large and small holders, and that the basis for the renew- ing of an upward movement is sounder than ever. This, at least, is the opinion of many wise specula- tive heads, who will have to confess themselves wrong if at least one more vigorous upward move- ment does not speedily ensue, The opening prices of stocks on Monday last | | ‘were :—New York Central, 1153z; Consolidated South- ern, 62; Erie, 26%; Lake Shore, 7314; Northwestern, 64%; Northwestern preferred, 863{; Rock Island, 1264; Milwaukee and St. Poul, 45; Milwaukee and St. Paul preferred, 8314; Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, 5434; New Jersey Central, 414;; Delaware and Hudson, 45; Morris and Essex, 843(; C., C, and I.
