FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Active . and Strong. Goverment Bonds Active, States Dull and Railroads Strong. Money on Call Easy at 2a 8 a 2 Per Cent, Wax SraxreEr, } Wepxrspay, Jan, 29—6 P, M. Although considerably scared by yesterday's break- fown in stocks the bull contingent was inclined this morning to meet the views of that celebrated but apochryphal navigator, who, upon being refused ssdmission to the ark, expressed his belief that the down pour was “nothing but a shower after all.” Judged by events they were right in their conjec- ture, for the storm of yosterday gave way to fair ‘weather to-day, and ‘‘all theclouds which lowered” so threateningly over the speculative house passed away without any ‘special wonder” upon the part of good bulls, who believe firmly in higher prices to come. Speaking for the bull party, yesterday's “dirty” weather cleared away before the close of the first hour's business, and, with the exception of an occa- sional cloud, there wero bright skies to the very end. Plainly, the market, which staggered during the first hour or two as though it had taken a drop too much the day before, became ly planted upon its legs by meridian and walked off for the rest of tho flay like a female pedestrian doing her quarter miles in quarter hours, From noon to gong sound the progress of the market was interruptedly upward, Almost without exception the proverbially active stocks advanced sufficiently to regain at least two- thirds 8¢ yesterday's loss, and in the case of Western Union the rise meant considerably more. From 97% the price rose to 101% and closed within a quarter per cent of these figures. Points to buy bristled like a cheveauz de frise ond were as abundant as those to be found in a paper of pins. They were ascribed first to Mr. Vanderbilt as 4 railroad king, and were promulgated secondly, under benefit of clergy, by a speculative divinc. Backed up thus by God and Mammon it is not surprising that they should have obtained roady credence. Some points in regard to Western Union were old, some new. Tfe assertion that the com- pany is greatly increasing its earnings is authenti- cated. Two per cent is confidently expicted for the next quarterly dividend. Jay Gould is counted to ‘be a dead cock in the pit, and no longer able to crow defiantly with the threat of opposition lines. Tho cipher scandal at Washington has snubbed any pres- ent possibility of a government absorbtion of the tele-« graph business. From one, another, or from all of there causes, Western Union bencfited, and became the prominent speculation of theday. Delaware and Lackawanns recovered 3 per cent from the early depression, although the coal sale showed a decline in prices of from 5 to 35 cents per ton. In Canada Southern, Michigan Centre) and the Northwesterns there was an improvement of from 3 to 4 per cent, and there was scarcely any stock upon the list, with any protence to popularity, but showed an advance upon opening prices. Strength- ened by a fresh short interest and the demand ®t smaller bulls, who were influenced yesterday to let 6° their grip, it is a fair supposition that the market will resume its upward course until it again topples over by sheer overweight.
