NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Very Ac- tive and Strong. Govemment Bonds Quiet, States Dull and Railroads Strong. Money on Call Very Easy at 11-2 @ 21-2 Per Cent, Monpay, Jan. 27—6 P. M. With unabated vigor prices upon the Stock Ex- change made a further advance to-day. It would Seem as though the market had gone into training ‘o achieve arise of any number of points in an indef- nite number of hours, and was lixely to accomplish it. Certainly there has been no give way of financial wind or muscle so far, and judging by the appear- ance of things there is not likely to be. keep moving” is the gag of the market as it was of the old-fashioned farce, and those who fail to observe it are left out in the cold, orto that demoniac in- fluence which is popularly supposed to overtake the “hindmost.” It is certainly extraordinary that the advance movement has progressed day after day without a single serious trip up; but it has done so nevertheless, much to the amazement of the veterans of the street and of the long headed operators, who begin to doubt whether their 734 ‘Derbies’”’ cover quite as much brains as they thought they did. By a large number of enthusiastic as well as expe- rienced bulls a reaction of any moment is regarded as improbable if not impossible. They argue that the percentage of returns from investments must rule for the future materially lower—that four, rather than seven per cent, will be the standard rate of interest, and that all securities now selling below par which show a fair probability of paying six to seven per cent to stockholders must advance to three figures and stay there. Influenced by this be- lief, there undoubtedly exists an unusual demand for the most desirable descriptions of railroad properties, and it has taken practical shape in the absorption of such stocks as Central and Hudson, Rock Island, Michigan Central and the Northwesterns, As regards the preferred shares of the latter com- pany, it is quite cortain that they have been vora- ciously gobbled up by outside parties, since they have quite disappeared from the offices of the leading speculative houses. With the exception of Ohios and Erie, there was a further advance to-aay of from 1to4% percent in the active list, the largest gain being credited to Canada Sonthern. Erie was shaky here because it wasso in London. Holders in the latter city being free from the intoxicating influence of the speculative cup, which everybody hero is haying # pull at, have taken advantage of the high prices to get out of a scrape with joy which they have been solong into with grief. As to the Ohio 4nd Mississippi speculation, it seems to have stopped on the centre. To all operators in this stock we give ® gratuitous tip:—‘‘Whenever you sce adollar of profit take it.” Money still continues to loan on call and on time at ridiculously low rates, say at 2 per cent for the former and at 3 per cent for the lat- ter as measured by a period of six months. For this latter time and price we know of a loan having been made to-day for $1,000,000 on mixed securities, Under the least shade of a decline the market closed, though there was no mitigation of the strength which has characterized it for two weeks past.
