FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market ‘Active and Strong at the Close, Govemment Bonds Firm, States Dull and Railroads Irregular, ——_-+—_—_. Money on Call Easy at 21.2 a 31.2 Per Cent, Watt STREET, } ‘Trunspay, Jan. 16—6 P. M. The desire to realize profits, combined with the depression created by Mr. Martin’s failure, were in- strumental, not only in lowering the prices of stocks yesterday, but of depressing them further to-day. It consequently happened that there was a general ‘give way” in early quotations, the seme being particularly significant in the cases of Delaware and Lackawanna, the Northwesterns and Lake Shore, The bears were, as a matter of course, prompted to “sit upon” the market, but just at present there are few heavy weights among these gentry, and the pressure exerted lacked. ponderosity as completely as though Mr. Peter Cooper had been present to insert the mitigat- ing circumstance of an air cushion between setter and settee, In this roundabout way we desire to convey the fact that though the market was con- genitally weak and pretty well knocked about by the bears afterward, no very serious injury was done to prices. A decline of 3 to 1 per cent was the extent of the damage, even in the most flagrant cases of weakness, and this was recovered from in great part during the rise of the afternoon. ‘The coal carriers were especially strong, Delaware and Lackawanna holding something more than its own, and Jersey Central gaining two percent upon opening figures. There is a growing feeling in favor of this stock, partly because its local business is good and partly because as a carrier for other corporations it is likely to earn money. In respect to the latter circum- stance we learn that the Reading Company com- menced on Monday last to run its coal trains. over this road to Port Johnson. Commencing with three trains on Monday the traffic was extended to ten trains on Wednesday, which (computing 500 tons to the train, at thirty cents per ton) affords a very com- fortable addition to the revenues of the road at the expense of a very inconsiderable outlay. The railroad and ocean steamer representatives held an adjourned meeting this morning to adjust a scale of prices for outward bound freights, but nothing definite was docided upon. The temporary paralysis in stocks noticeable in the decline yesterday afternoon and this morning was nearly altogether recovered from in final dealings, and to all appearances the market is about to get upon its legs again and start off upon another upward climb as good as new. RUMORED COAL COMBINATION, On Wall street yesterday all sorts of rumors were afloat about the formation of a new coal combination, It was reported that Mr. Samuel Sloan, president of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company, had been in consultation, within a few days, with ox-Ju“go Packer, president of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company; that the latter had con- siderably modified his views, and that he and Sloan had come to an understanding which would probably be ratified by the other companies. The Lehigh Valley peopic meet in Philadelphia on Monday, and it is rumored that a movement ts on foot looking to anew combination, It was stated that the inclem- of the weather and the prosperity of the iron trade had created @large demand for coal, and that the prospects of tho coal companies were becoming much brighter, BUSINESS TROUBLES, Dominique Durand, importer 4nd manufacturer of looking glass plates, made.an assignment yesterday, without preferences, to Eugene Martinache, ‘Thomas O'NGil, dealer in boots and shoes, made an assignment, without preferenc to Henry Allen, ‘The liabilities are represented at about $6,000, Max Spiess, liquor dealer, assigned to Louis Weiler, giving three ES ferences amounting to $1,044, Daniel Webster Arnold made an assignment to William K. Swift, giving preferences to three creditors. Isadore Pintt to Isadore Busch, with preferences amounting to $7,000, n OUR COMPLAINT BOOK. Complainants who are unwilling to comply with this rule simply waste time in writing, Write only on one side of the paper.—Ep,. Hznaup.) DANGEROUS SIDEWALKS, To rae Eprror or tax Heratp:— Since the first snow storm this winter thesnow has not been cleared around Gilmore's Garden. The re- sult is that the walks are covered with 9 thick coate ing of fee, making it dangerons to walk. 8. A. N. A WEEK'S SUPPLY. To rue Eprror or tHe HeRatp:— Allow me to call the attention of the authorities to the necessity of removing the ashes in Christopher street which have been accumulating for a week It is a great nuisance and an inconvenience. X, 1s IT A MYTH? To THe Eprror oF THE HERALD:— Is there such a thing in existence as « Street Cleaning Department? If there is I respectfully call its attention to the barrels of gar! which have been standing in Twenty-fifth street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues, for the last ten days. TENANT. AN INJURY TO BUSINESS, ‘To Tue Eprtor or Tux Hznaup:— Is it right that the Third Avenue “L” Railroad should encumber the sidewalk between Sixty-third and Sixty-fourth streets with their closed up station stairs, to the injury of business and the inconven- ience of the public? BB, UNSIGHTLY TELEGRAPH POLES, To Tae Eviron or THE HERaup:— The Western Union Company are placing their crooked poles all along lower Broadway. Has this corporation a right to disfigure our streets in this manner? These eyesores are not only a di to the city, but are a positive detriment to architec- tural beauty. ARTIST. THIRD AVENUE SAVINGS BANKS, To rie Eprron or tHe Henaup:— Who is spending the rest of our hard esrned money?, Is it Mr. Hurd, the receiver, and his clerks? has Mr. Hurd collected the money from the trustees, against whom he got judgment for the full amount ot their bonds with interest ten or cleven mouths ago? Is there no stated time in which a broken say- ings bank is supposed to wind up its affsirs? All Mr. Hurd has paid us so far is fifteen*cents on the dollar. SUFFERING DEPOSITOR. EXPRESS CHARGES, To tHE Epiror or THE HERaLD:— Some days ago we sent a small parcel, weighing perhaps three-quarters of a pound, to Warren, Mags., by the Adams Express Company. Thecharges thereon were sixty-five cents. To-day Ceara we received the envelope containing the returns therefor, $2 40, and the charge on this latter was forty cents, the company thus realizing nearly forty-five per cent of the full value. If this charge is a legitimate‘one some retorm is necessary, and we trust your calling attention to the matter may not be in vain. GOING BROTHERS. NEGLECT OF THE PARK DEPARTMENT. To Tae Epiror or THz Herap:— ‘The pathway in Central Park, leading from the Seventy-second street gate (west), and passing the spur, has not been shovelled or in any way attended to since the snow storm on New Year's Day. Itis now a shect of ice, and, as it is used by persons on the west side on their way to church and the Normal College it would seem that the almost general neglect of the Department ot Parks should not extend so much in this direction. Every person who en! the Park, os; on Sunday, is not bound for skating ing pond. ENTS WEST. SEVENTY-FIRST STREET, VENTILATION ON THE FERRYBOATS. .* To Tae Epitos or THE HenaLp:— Every one accustomed to crossing any of ‘im ferries can bear testimony to the bad ventilation of the boats. Often when entering the cabin just after it has been crowded with people the atmosphere is rfectly foul. ‘Chis should not be so and would not y the ventistion had been _propesty ‘attended to, ‘There seems to be no way pro at present, — it is tne opening of the windows and doors. winter weather this cannot be done if the ptt the passengers is to be taken into consideration, The boats must be ventilated in some other way, Let the matter be kept before the public, and 6 necessity tor the thorough ventilation ef our churches, schools, ferry’ and cars be ad: until a reform is instituted. NB NEW JERSEY CENTRAL COMMUTATION. To THR Eprror oF THE — “J. H. L.” bas exp in your issue of the 18th inst. the sentiments of pfobably every commuter on the Central Railroad of New Jersey when he refers to the high prices charged for tickets. While I cheer fully praise the management for handsome cars and ferrybosts, gentlemanly employés and promptness in runuing—which reputation they have carned more thoroughly perhaps than any other road leading into New York—still I must urge the necessity ton rates that shall be more in conformity with the times, Very few who patronize the road are now receii incomes equal to those of former years, while many have had their salaries reduced one-t or one-half, and those hat families are com) to economize every dollar. I trust the officers of the road will see that the fare is mad satisfactor TEMPORA MUT. THE INTEROCEANIC CANAL To tne Eprron of TAR HeRauD: — The editorial article upon the interoceanic canal through the American isthmus in the Heraip’s issue of the Sth inst, is greatly in error and does an injus- tice to the United States. In the first place, it mys that “Lieutenant N. B. Wyse's report to the French Interocean!* anal Association on the operations of the exploring party under his command reduces to a certain simplicity the chaos of projects for the con- struction of a canal which shall connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.” How this simplicity is attained the article does not clearly state, but if it means that adding two more lines to those already surveyed and reporting favorably upon them it certainly seome that such an ition would increase the chaos alluded to in the article, supposing any existed; or the 01 other way outoft it is by believing Lieu- tenant Wyse'’s judginent to be infallible in poy science of engineering, and hence the ease with which sim. plicity can be obtained. ‘The article considers that ‘one of the discouraging aspects of the yreat enterprise bas been the difficulty of finding any one to determine which of the multitudinous routes already proposed was really preferable for solid reasons to all others,” and in e¢ doing is greatly in efror for. the reeson thst » commission consisting of General ean peee tee States Army; Commodore Ammen, States Navy, and Eroteaase Eietoe, Gaon one Const 4 vey, appointed by President Grant for the purpose o: Inve atlaating the claims of different routes laid down for the canal, gave the subject an cxhaustive study, and from an abundance of reliable data wag able to report very decidedly upon the advantages ahd disadva of each route, and to recommend the Nicaragua line as the most practicable, Instead of a condition of chaos regarding the project tor the loca- tion of the canal there is every evidence of system since the United States’ instituted the explorations and surveys of the different portions of the isthmus, and it would seem that the imaginings of » chaotic condition resulted from the supposed existence of sixteen plans. There are, exclusive of the two lines surveyed by Lieutenaut Wyse, only seven routes that havo held out any encouragement for @ survey from ocvan to ocean, and four these have by their proportional impracticability been considered of the race. From the fact that Lioutenant Wyse rejecta by wholesale all the lines surveyed save his own, it must be considered that he stands prominently forth as one of the class which, according to contributes to the supposed chaotic fete vik The article is certainly right in regarding the work of Lieutenant Wyse as iinportant material for the con- sideration of the Interoceanic Canal Commission, but its importance will be to prove that the surveys made under the direction of the United States gov ernment were exhaustive toa degree, which confirma- tory proot will be very acceptable, ‘to enter into a discussion of the merits of the dif- ferent routes would necessitate # lengthy article, nor 18 there occasion for such discuesion as the present purpose is attained in correcting tho mistakes which Freflect unjustly upon the United States and upon tho oilicers who so zealously and faithfully performed the diMoult duties of prosecuting the surveys in that terrible country. At the International Con; of Commercial eecgeae ny held in the “naar, Paris, last Septem! © subject to which greatest attention was paid ‘Was the project of a canal across the American isthmus, and it waa there known and recognized in a very complimentary manner that the United States deserves groat credit for the excellent results of its surveys. JOUN T. SULLIVAN, Lieutenant United States Navy, THE PINCKNEY INVESTIGATION, The investigation into the Pinekney irregulagitie® yesterday went over the old ground of those ‘who had never seen the Judge drink upon the bench, Several witnesses were examined, all of whom testified to this effect, Mr. James K. Davies still ki ont of the way of subpenas and attachments, and it is not expectad that his evidence will be Cay to the Gen- ral Term.
