To tHe Eprror or rae HERaup:— Allow me to meke a suggestion to the new Mayor—~ namely, to set some poor unemployed men to clear the gutters of slush, . OLD CITIZEN. SEATS FOR THE SKATERS, To THe Eprror or THE Heraup:— There are several hundred benches in Central Park which are not needed along the canes giguial a comfort of thousands of skaters would be by placing them around the Parga of the lak “rte ing the skating season. Will the authorities not take the hint ? SKATER, A HORRIBLE SIGHT, To THe Eprror oy THE HeRaLp:— Ashes and garbage are removed from Broadway now. only about twice a week and aroe.so packed and frozen that the barrels and boxes have to be broken by ham- mering with a shovel. I have seen box and all carried away. The sight of these old boxes and barrels along the whole line of this beautiful thoroughfare is Aned rid. Why have we not the regular formerly? a L8 3 pati Asi WHOLESALE THIEVERY. To tHe Eprron or THE HERALD:— Please caution the public, and grocerymen partica- larly, against the thieves who, with horse and wagon, go about stealing bulky articles, such as barrols of sugar, flour, &c., which the grocer gen thinks safe on the stoop of the store. Pig Eel the loser of a barrel of sugar recently in this way I wish to caution others who otherwise may ibly be victimized, THE LAW'S DELAY, To tHe Eprtor or Tur HERALD:— On the 15th of August last I suffered a brutal and unprovoked assault. A true bill was found against the defendant by the Grand Jury. Since then the case has been called four times and each time set aside for no reason, save the moneyed influence of the defendant. Now I ask—Have I no redreas? I have exhausted my limited means and sacrificed my position in the prosecution. JUSTICE. POISONOUS CIGARS, ‘To THE Eprtor o¥ THE HERALD:— I wish to call the attention of the smokers to the new and hurtful style of fabrication of cigars now in use by a great many cigar manufacturers of this city. Iam suffering from a painful inflammation of both lips, and only yesterday, after three weeks’ treatment, the doctor found out that this inflamma- tion was caused by tho use of ci colored with a hurtful, dark, poisonous aie WHAT IS THE PROSPECT? To THe Eprtor oy THE HERALD:— It is nearly three months since the Mechanics and Laborers’ Bank in Jersey City: failed. After the Examiner shut it up the directors and their hired man promised to make good the deficiency, but now some of “their little excellencies’”’ threaten, if annoyed, that they will pull out, as they say, from “the blamed thing.” As a depositor, I tl ink it would be about time that the suffering depositors should know something sbout it. RATHKEALENSIS. AHEAD OF TIME, To tus Eprror oF THE HERALD:— ‘This morning (January 9), at twenty-eight minutes past seven o’clock (ball time), the price was run up to ten cents at the Eighty-fourth street station on the Third Avenue Elevated Railroad. You will see at once that this is an infringement on the rights of the pub- lic and if allowed to pass without notice there is no telling where it will end, As the Heratp has done more to work reformé in this direction than all the dailies put together you will confer favor by in- serting the above, J.B. F, A SENSIBLE ALTERNATIVE, To tne Eprror or THE HeRaup:— I beg to call your attention, and also that of the Street Cleaning Department, to the fact that for the past two weeks the ash barrels along Seventh ave- nue have not been emptied. I reside between Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth streets, and there are six barrels full in front of the door, which are not only offensive to the sight and smell, but also revent my getting ina supply of coal. What has come of the Commissioners, who ought to: look after this nuisance? If the ashes cannot be removed, why not remove the Sep erngeyF wl and [* ir positions to those who will look better public good? Respectfully, | SEVENTH AVENUE.” SAVE THE BRIDGE, To rue Eprror or THe Henatp:— A person strolling through Central Park cannot fail to observe the beautiful bridge at the northern end of the Mall, which cost the city such avast amount of money, failing and falling to decay for want of proper foresight, mechanical knowledge and good judgment, Not only are the beautifully carved panels with their finely raised and well executed designs suffered to be knocked and broken by ruthless and ignorant boys, but the whole grand struc will soon become an eyesore to our citizens and to those who visit our great city for the want of a@ little careful touching up and rubbing down, which would saye it from the ravages of the elements. To neglect it icon is false economy. TICKETS FOR THE SCHOOL CHILDREN. To Tue Eprron or THe Heranp:— In peering out of my window a few mornings ago and noticing the small boys and girls trudging along to school through the rain and slush—most of them looking very wet and miserable indeed—I asked my- self, Must they not be very uncomfortable for the rest of the day? and do not many of them go home sick and feverish? Of course. And then the thought occurred, why could not the street railroad com- panies issue ‘school tickets” at one cent each, for the sole use of children going to and from school? Such a plan would yield # large income to the com- panies, for hundreds of little ones would ride, and enerally at such hours when the cars have not much Business. The benefit to the children’s — to their day’s corbfort at school and to their happiness at home would be, indeed, incalculable. the School Commissioners and railroad beware gs their heads together and see if they coula accome plish it. B. a. THE WIDENING OF ALLEN STREET, To tne Evrror or THe Hengrp:— As I understand, some twenty years ago a project to widen Allen street was on foot. The property had been taxed and the street was to receive an additional width of twenty-four feet. Itseeimsto me that this will some day become not only expedient, but even necessary. The Metropolitan Elevated Railroad will build its structure through this now narrow street, and thereby deprociate the value of the real estate there to a great extent. NECESBIT: COMMUTATION ON THE JERSEY CENTRAL. To rae Eprron oF THR HenaLp:— ‘There is general complaint made by the commuters of the Central New Jersey Railroad not only respect- ing the present rates of commutation, but iso of the present system of commuting, which has lasted long enough to prove its inconvenience. When we consider the reductions made in all things during the last five years it seems absurd that the company should still keep its rates as high as they were ten years ago. While those who travel have gerierally had their means reduced from twenty-five to fifty per cent, and are, therefore, by so much leas able to bear such heavy rates, the cor y has reduced the salary of their gore. and the Tannese expenses of tho road as much and bly more—two oa yh of lower rates, The system in also bad, resent arrangement a man ege | "a tri hrough sickness or otherwise, lowes are ‘4 the company, whieh porn receives. money ek be bony b Again, any nok or mis+ jay by 1s aes aud can only be Toltubureed Gy: kaceaaing ae an tral office, To # man whose Ae seny ng is plow, aad from which he is not free until after of et this hd a ox em!
