FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Fairly Ac- tive and Steady. MONEY ON CALL 4 A 2 PER CENT. Government Bonds Firm, States Steady and Railroads Strong. Warn hay * Monpay, Jan, P. Mt. In previous articles we have advanced Bales for & prospective improvement of values upon the stock market, and nothing nas occurred to change them to-day. Fortunately or unfortunately (as it may be regarded from an orthodox or heterodox point of view), the intervention of » Sunday affords an oppor- tunity to the stock jobber to.con the financial situa- tion, and he usually does so with supreme indiffer- ence to the threatened terrors of bell, book and candle. Judged by results, the bearish stock specu- lator, cogitating through the leisure hours of a Sun- day holiday as to what it would be best to do, has come to the conclusion that if there were no good teasons to buy stocks there were certainly none to sell them. It followed, therefore, as @ sequitur that the bears in to-day’s stock market were few and far between. It must be confessed, numerically speaking, there waa not an overplus of bulls, Between the disinclination to act on either side (as happened in the case of the storied stools) the market fell to the ground and remained there, dull, lethargic and in- capable of coming to time in the sense of an active business. Nevertheless, there was 2 good deal of latent strength in the list, and part of it oozed out, to the bettermont of alffthe most prominent specula- tives. Thus the whole active list showed firmer at the end than it had done at the beginning, and, if no brilliant progress were made, there was still some- thing of gain to be recorded, and the bull contin- gent was satisfied to retire for the day in full accept- ance of the proposition that half a loaf was better than no bread. In the case of Erie and Michigan Central, however, the bulls got the best part of the loaf and gathered such crumbs of comfort as were attainable ‘from the fact that these stocks had made the best advance of the day.. Erie closed with a gain of nearly one per cent in spite of the be- Nef that Mr. Keene had been feeding the market, and Michigan Central with about the same improvement, because there were strong buyers who anticipate much higher prices as a reflection of the intrinsic value of the property. By a telegram from Washing- ton over Mr. Kiernan’s tape it appears that the report of Judge Harlan’s decision, in the case of the C.,C. and I. C, road vs. the Pennsylvania road, as reported in the street, was without authority. The Justice has made no decision and may not do so for some time to come, The correction of the rumor was, however, without material influence upon the prices of either bonds or stocks. Although dull the general share market was strong the day through, aud in many cases the closing prices were better than opening ones. The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks at the New York Stock Exchange to-day were as follows:— Michigan Contral Union Pacific h. 21 aig ahs New Jersey Cen ETS 34 Brag Illinois Central . 813, 80 BON C., C. and I, C. 5: 5 ada South sii 48 4g Pittsburg...... 86% = BH“ BU HG The closing quotations of stocks at three P.
