FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Review of the Week—-A Fairly Active Speculation in Stocks. THE GOLD AND MONEY MARKETS. Watt StRezt, Sunpay, Jan. 5, itto.} What with the full stop to business occasioned by the recurrence of New Year's festival, the slowing up of the day before and tho difficulty of getting under way again the day after, the first week of the year is apt to bea dull one. That the one just passed Bway was exceptionally active is due to exceptional causes. Beyond peradventure the most important of these is to be found in the quiet, complete and altogether successful operation of the Resumption act, whereby the blot which disfigured the country’s credit for some sixteen years has been effectually, and, it is to be hoped, permanently scratched from the page of the nation’s ledger. However differently the immediate results of equalizing gold and green- backs may have been viewed by the community Bt large, there is no doubt as to how it is Fogarded by the Stock Exchange. No sooner ‘was assurance had that the gold premium had passed away without financial disturbance and with the ease and quietude of a dissolving view, than a brisk speculation started up in the better lasses of bonds and stocks that are placed upon the board list. The demand was especially directed to such securities as are already dividend paying or promise to become so, it being rightly argued that resumption means expansion to the extent that gold as merchandise is converted into gold as money, and that in its changed capacity the new capital must speedily seek investment. Added to this vast sum aro the disbursements made on account of dividends and interest, amounting, it is estimated, to some fifty millions of dollars, which, having been earned by investment in diverse kinds of personal property, naturally seek reinvestment in the same description of securities. It is no wonder, then, that an impetus was given to the railroad bond list and to such promising specialties on the share list 2s Central and Hudson, Rock Island, Michigan Central, Western Union and the grangers. Better prices to the extent of % to 4 per cent were made early in the week, and, although they were par- tially reduced at the end by a very natural desire upon. the part of the smaller speculators to realize profits (which nowadays come so few and far between), there was nothing to dispel the belief that the market is tending strongly toward higher prices. In fact, the prospects are all the better from the considerable short interest made yesterday. The condition of “too much company” is a8 dangergus in the stock market \s too great a crowd in a theatre and is liable to breed a panic if anything goes wrong. The second great teature of the week was the extraordinary subscrip- tion to the 4 per cent loan, though this was partially + Sttributable to the circumstance that subscribers had “held back” in order to obtain the government commission payable on and after the first of the year. The week was notable also for arise in Erie and New Jersey Central, with which speculation had probably more to do than merit, though the comple- tion of the narrow gauge on the first and the pros- pects of the Reading and Baltimore and Ohio con- nections on the part of the second are advanced as reasons for the improvement. In the coal stocks there were no new developments pointing combina- tionward, and quotations, which took a considerable range and swayed between strength and weakness, were due entirely to the handiwork of professional opeculators, The following table represents the opening, highest and lowest sales of the principal stocks dealt in during the past week :—- Lowest. and Susquehanna 7 Sse Bene ie Tel i 2934 281g Burlington, Cedar R. an: ‘and N.. my = aay Chicago and Northwestern.... 495 614% 49% Chicago and Northwestern pf. It is nearly a fortnight since Abram Bailey, who resided near Manhassett, was buried in Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead, L,I. Mr. Bailey owned a dog, resembling very much a Newfoundland, which followed the funeral cortége to the grave- yard and never returned to its home, From the minute that the grave was filled the dog has kept faithful vigil over it, and so continu- ously has he slept upon it that his shape has been worked into the clay. The people generally, moved to kindness by the dog's faithfulness, have given him food plentifully, and young ladies lave strewn the und with sweet morsels. Nevertheless the dog ‘a8 not been seen to eat anything and is reduced to a skeleton. The intense cold weather of the few days and nights past was not suflicient to drive him to shelter, but he was at all times found a faithful ‘sentry, and the wonder is that he was not frozen to death by the cold and buried in the snow. Many people, hearing of the case, have jour- neyed to the graveyard to verify it, During Thurs- day and Friday some people tried to coax the dog away, os an act of humanity, intending to treat him kindly, but failed, and several attempts to catch him by throwing a rope over his head, were not more successful. The faithful brute has aroused the sym- pathy of @ whole community. During yesterday eople peered through the picket tence at his shivering form and pitied him. THE WORLD PRINTERS. A special meeting of Typographical Union No. 6 was held in Pythagoras Hall, in Canal street, yester- day afternoon. Committees of compositors from the various newspaper offices in the city were present, and the attendance numbered fully three hundred. Mr. J Ganong occupied the chair and Mr. Charles W. Colburn acted as secretary. The meeting was called for the purpose of taking suitable action regarding the course pursued toward the members of the union NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 1879.--TRIPLE SHEET, xa |THE TEMPERANCE CRUSADE. GRAND MEETING AT COOPER INSTITUTE YESTER- DAY—UNITING THE FORCES FOR THE COMING ONSET ON RUM--JUDGE PITMAN, FRANCIS MURPHY, DR. FULTON AND OTHER SPEAKERS. “I'm tired of standing with one foot on the consti- tion ana another on a whiskey barrel to save the democratic party,” said Judge Pitman yesterday at the great temperance meeting in Cooper Institute. ‘The house rang with the long continued applause that greeted this declaration, aud there was no dimi- nution when he added that he made this declaration for the benefit of any of his democratic friends who might be present. The Judge was not the first or only speaker; but the crowded audience which filled every seat and left many persons standing around the walls of the large hall shared their approbation about equally between Mr. Murphy and Judge Pitman. Indeed, the enthusiasm was too great for the managers to carry out their purpose in the flaming advertisements which they had sent out. That purpose was to effect an organ- ization and to raise the nucleus of a fund for earry- ing on the temperance campaign in this city. Mr. J. B. Gibbs, the president, threw out the suggestion in his opening remarks and bade the audience think about it. ‘They did think, and afew acted by giving their names and subscriptions to Mr. Gibbs, Mr. Powell, the treasurer, or Mr, Murphy, “the champion reformer of the nineteenth century,” as his old friend and spiritual father, Captain Sturdivant, called him. But though the meeting was announced to close at five P, M., it was nearly twenty minutes later when it adjourned to reassemble in the Thirty- fourth Street Methodist Episcopal Church, where, as Mr. Murphy announced, meetings will be held daily at noon and in the evening for at least a month, The organization, which is designed to embraco the Clare: Mathew societies and all others who will unite with them on a broad basis of compelling liquor dealers to obey the law and redeeming men ruined by the deadly vice of intemperance, will be effected to-day in the Tabernacle Methodist Episcopal Church, and the financial scheme will then be perfected. If the plan proposed shall be adopted it will require the renun- ciation for the present of separate action by the local societies, so that all efforts may be directed from a common starting point. This centre, if the money is forthcoming, will be in -Cvoper Institute, where a room or rooms can be hired on the Qpor above the street and the great hall can be had of Sabbaths for don Hall Temperance Union, Father meetings like that of yesterday. MURPHY DONE WITH RUM. When Mr. Murphy got up to speak he was received with applagse, He did not see, he said, why all tem- perance workers could not unite on a broad Catholic basis. He did not believe in clyb suasion, It was not aclub that saved Paul. It was kindness and love that made him the great apostle to the Gentiles that he was. A house divided against itself cannot stand, and while one man or one organization may prefer local option, another prohibition, and a third regu- lation by law, all could unite in a Gospel temperance campaign to save the dtunkard and to shut up as many grogehops as they can. His own position on this question is that so long as the State or the muni- cipality grauts license to sell the liquor dealer has as good a right to sell rum as a merchant has to sell dry goods. But he denies that the State has this right to blight homes, to make paupers, to fill prisons and almshouses and graves with drunkards and to increase the taxes of the sober, in- ustrious people to do this thing. ‘This was ‘said with an earnestness that called forth rounds of ap- plause. Continuing his remarks Mr. Murphy said that he had more sympathy with the liquor dealer who sells rum for his bread and butter than with the rich man who gives it away to demoralize society. But, he added, when we stop buying the liquor dealer will stop selling, and not before. (Applause.) ihe have got through selling liquor ——” said Mr. furphy. Voice—"Thank Goa.” And through drinking liquor, also. Voice--Hallelujah!” “And I will say to you that all my trouble has come to me through intoxicating drinks, And if I can rise out of the ashes of @ wasted life, which has madejme prematurely old, you can and every other mun can.’ ‘Mr. Wenzell, one of Murphy's converts at Pitts- burg, Pa., told how bitterly opposed he was to tem- perauce people and their work, He had never at- tended such a meeting until Murphy went to Pitts- burg. He was invited to go to one of his meetings, and then to ridicule his sincerity and declare that he was lecturing only for the money that it brought him. But now he could thank God that Mr. Murphy ever went to that smoky city. “UGLY JIM” AND OTHER CONVERTS, Mr. Murphy started the hymn “Oh, to grace how eat a debtor,” in which the choir and audience joined. He then introduced the man to whom under God he owes all he is, and who it was tapped him on the shoulder and asked him to sign the pledge PIANoFOnTEs ORGANS, &, HE MAJESTY 'S OPERA Ob xx FLATT ING COMPLIMENT 10 seh TEAS & SONS AcapEmy or Music, New You, Dee, 28, 1874, Messrs.
