8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL GOLD 100 A 100 1-64. Govemment Bonds Firm, States Steady and Railroads Strong. MONEY ON CALL 446A 4 PER CENT. een ieemennenae . Farmar, Dec. 27—6 P. M. ‘The speculative doctors who diagnosed yester- sy's closing market as being a pretty “sick” one ‘were inclined to-day to report it to be ‘as well as could be expected.” Whatever changes of values @c- curred this morning were of & homeopathic descrip- tion and the differences at the end “ot the day were marked by “‘infinitesimals.” That is to say that things were no worse and no better, and that for the day at least the allopaths of the bull contingent re- frained from any heroic treatment which might tend to strengthen the market. Left thus without especial speculative aid, most of the usually active stocks remained dull and neglected. ‘The Northwest- erus, the St. Pauls and Lake Shore scarcely varied more than one-quarter per cent the day through, while the light-timbered outsiders scarcely changed at all. Such animation as existed was confined to Erie aud the coal stocks. As regards the first mentioned, it was clear that the spurt engineered in this market yesterday would call for sellers upon the London market to-day, and these sold the more frecly in that they had been cut off from marketing their holdings by yesterday's holiday. Consequently the price fell on the London market and was shaky upon the home one, nothing better being achieved on this side of the water than keeping the quotation steady. ‘There be- ing no real work cut out for profitable operations in the general list speculators passed their leisure time ‘until afternoon hours in dancing attendance upon the Anthracite Board of Control, which held their meeting to-day, In waiting for the verdict from this body, as to whether the coal companies were to be guilty or not guilty of a combination for 1879, the general market remained sluggish and dull. When the news came, however, that nothing had been done at the meeting, a brisk activity sprung up in Delaware and Lackawanna, which depressed the stock from 4234 to 41:{, though at the close 415 was obtained. It ap- pears thatthe Lehigh Valley Company failed to put in a representation, and in the absence,ef this indis- Ppensable factor it was agreed that no action could be taken toward renewing this combination for another year. So it would appear that the monopoly is dead and delivered over to the undertaker—requiescat in pace—no flowers. In proof that the combination is very dead indeed, and no shamming, we hear from good authority that the Beading Bailroad has dis- posed of some of its most valuable collieries to the Lehigh Valley Company and that the latter corpora- tion has the yefusalof more of the same sort from the same company, the value of which, as estimated in flush times at $4,000,000, being now reduced to $1,000,000 in the hopes of striking bargain. If our information be correct it bears prima facie evidence that the Lehigh Valley Company does not mean to tie itself up by any combination, but intends to in- trease its production and sell it at best obtainable prices. ‘The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of atocks at the New York Stock Exchange to-day were ‘28 follows :— Opening.
