NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1878.—WITH FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Dull and Feverish. GOLD 100 132 A 100 164. Government Bonds Firm, States Dull and Railroads Higher. Money on Call 5a 6a 2 Per Cent. ‘Turspar, Dec, 24—6 P. M. From the earliest days of Stock Exchange history the eve before Christmas has been given over, by & mutual understanding between Governing Com- mittee and members, to the “‘farceurs” of the Board Room, who, if they checked businesa by their horse play, at least returned a quid pro quo by the creation of a general hilarity. The time-honored observance of Christmas Eve, with its traditional charicars ac- companiments, met to-day with the usual recogni- tion, and for an hour or two the queer spectacle afforded by the act of celebrating a Christian festi- val through the exercise of pagan rites and cere- Monies engrossed popular attention, Afterward, when things had sobered down a dit, brokers and traders got to work, and the old, hum- drum, monotonous grind ct the speculation wheel recommenced. As it turned out there was very little grist afforded to this morning’s mill. There were no rumors to affect prices and little in- clination upon the part of leading operators to con- trol them either. Hence, when we record the market to be steady, strong and dull we give it all the credit it is deserving of, Asa matter of figures the list was rather drooping than otherwise, the Erie road being alone among the active stocks to show a higher price at the close than at the beginning. This result was mainly due to an active demand for shares attributed to Mr. Gould and Mr. Keene, and to the report that sformidable pool had been formed to advance the stock, the groundwork for the same being the very atisfwtecy accounts of the past six months’ earnings and the promising future which the completion of the third rail to New York holds out. Later in the day the price receded a fraction. Somebody had blundered by cable in re- porting the London price to be 213, when the real quotation was 19%. The art of lying by lightning is gradually working its way to recognition as a fine art on ’Change. Excepting Erie the remainder of the ac- tive list was fractionally lower at the close of busi- Ress, though the market as a whole may be quoted as very satisfactorily strong in consideration of the dulness which prevailed and the apathy which ever precedes the occurrence of a close holiday. To-mor- tow the Stock Exchange, Custom House, banks and other marta ‘‘where merchants most do congregate” will be closed in commemoration of Christmas Day, and as a concession to any possible indiscretion upon the part of Board members the Board Room will not open on Thursday morning until eleven o'clock.
