Robinson, twenty years old, of Spring: field, Mass., went to the Brewers’ Journal office, in Park place, some time ago, and by representations that he was a partner in the firm of Wallace, Shard & Co., of Springfield, Mass., induced Mr. A. E, Tovey to cash a check for $50, Afterward he went to the Glen Cove Stareh Company and Diamond Sugar Works and offices in Park pls and on the same representations ordered thirty-six barrels of sugar and borrowed $5¢ from Mr, E. Taylor, The checks which he had presented were drawn on the Third Na tional Bank, of Springfield, Mass., and when 8 there’ they were protested, — Superine tendent Walling was informed and on inves tigation it was learned that Robinson had been stop- ping at Karle’s Hotel, but had lett there. He came back, however, and ‘was arrested. He assured the officials that all his transactions were legiti and telegraphed to the Springfield Bank a request for money. An answer was returned, however, that the bank officials did not know hint and Deteetive Mo: Cormack yesterday took Robinson to the Central Oflive re he will be held for production in court to-day. RATES ON THROUGH FREIGHT. The new schedule reported to be agreed upon by the railroads at Chicago would make rates fifty-eight to sixty cents per 100 pounds on through freights; Dut no business was reported yesterday on those quotations. On the other hand, it was said at the Produce Exchange that a large number of contracts, sufficient to carry on future business for some time, are reported on the basis of fifty cents per 106 pounds, and even lower. It was claimed that the present condition of the English market was such that it would be a matter of impossibility to transact business on usual rat and for that reason it wag thought among the members of the Exchange, that the agreement between the railroads would not last. Berth rates from the seaboard to Europe continue yery weak. —————— MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, MARRIED. Prrrre—Harrrr—On Tuesday, December 17, 1878, at Calvary Chapel, by the Rey. William D.
