FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL leant armies The Stock Market Fairly Ac- tive and Steady. GOLD 100 1-32 A 100 3-64, Government Bonds Weaker, States Lower and Railroads Strong. MONEY ON CALL 4 A 7 PER CENT, ise WALL Srnzer, } Tuunspay, Dec, 19—6 P, M, The Stock Exchange this morning was chiefly re- markable for intense duluess and the absence of allexciting rumors. A day of this description not infrequently drops in at the heels of # preceding activity, and in nine cases outof ten proves to be the advance courier of a new and vigorous specula- tion, Time to take breath is as necessary to the operator struggling with stocks as to the pugilist in a twenty-foot ring, for without it there is little chance of obtaining that desirable ‘second wind” which {fs a “sine qua von” doth in finance and fisticuffs, For this or some other equally cogent reason prime speculators kept out of the arena to-day and valuea were pretty much left to make them- scivyes, It naturally happened, therefore, that business was greatly restricted, with prices irregular and in most cases lower, Transactions were chiefly confined to Lake Shore, Westérn Union and the coal stocks, with the grangers following next in order., Lake Shore remains an unsolvable puzzle. The best guessers inthe Board are at fault and offer no satis- factory explanation as to why it hangs fire when the rest of the list goes up like a rocket or why the point of 70" offers such an insurmountable obstacle. Certainly on the stock reaching these figures there is a horde of sellers who come down like a wolf on the fold and play the mischief generally. Of course, of these financial Avsyrians popular rumor points to either Vandérbilt, Gould or Keene as the destroyer enchef. If not one it is the other. In most cases the malice prepense is shouldered upon Mr. Vanderbilt, an@ if he be not the guilty party he is made to look so. Thus, for soveral days past, tho brokerage house which acts as agent for the road and is supposed to be in Mr. Vanderbilt's confidences has been a free seller of the Lake Shore stock, and ay @ natural consequence the price has been weak and sickly, the belief in @ respectable div- idend shaken and all faith in the good accounts of the road materially damaged. This is probably just what was sought to be attained, and though a three per cent dividend will almost surely be declared to-mor- row and a respectable surplus shown there were as many unbelieving Thomases at the end of the day at the beginning. Another stock to decline was Western Union, and with more reason, for its market value, bolstered up to inflated figures by the romantic hopes of improbable dividends, has not yet sunk back to where it belongs, while, from all accounts, the Colgate suit for damages for illegal use of patent is daily assuming a more threatening shape, Among the few strong stocks upon the list was Michigan Central, the price ‘advancing from 1% to 70% and closing at70%;. There is likewise a dividend agita- tion in this sepurity, the prevailing belief being that two per cont will be declared and enough left to pay off the dividend borrowed on the last occasion. The anthracite fancies also ranged themselves upon the strong side of the market and, by doing so, much perplexed the bears, who cannot reconcile their firm- ness with the tumble in coa! and the foggy prospect of » new combination. Rock Island was less strong than yesterday, the bulls beginning to discover that they were rather procipitate in their notions as toan additional issue of scrip or stock. New Jersey Cen- tral declined 1 per cent, holders not seeing thelr way quite so clearly to Baltimore and the West ag they did yesterday, while the grangers were depressed in turn, rather from neglect than from any other reason, Money was again temporarily pinched up to 7 per cent, but closed at 4 per cent. Human.) HINTS TO RECEIVER BANGS, To rae Eprror or THE HEeRaLD:— If Mr. Bangs would neme the little property which he says he cannot sell with advantage, and which keepa him from settling up the affuirs of the bank, one of the cheated depositors might be able to find a cus- tomer for the same, or at least satisfy himself that it is not Mr. Banks’ fault that it is not sold. cK + GAS COMPANIES AND THE STREETS. To tur Epitor or THe Herap:— A heavy expense is thrown on the city by the gaa companies in tearing up the streets and not putting the pavement in repair again, Third avenue, from Fitty-ninth et north, which was in perfect order, has been ruined by one of the gas companics lately. Is there no one to look after this most important of our city expenses? ‘AXPAY, , A DANGEROUS BRIDGE, To rue Eprror or THe HeRaLp:— Tain a milkman, and have occasion to pass and re pass the Farmers’ Bridge, crossing the Harlem River between Fordham and Kingsbridge, twice a day, with a horse and wagon, The side walls on both sides of the bridge are crumbling to pieces; nay, the wall on the Fordham side has already fallen. There is a larga hole reaching from the foundation to the top, It has also bulged out and is ready to fat! altogether, The wallon the Kingsbridge side is also in nearly as bad a condition, the abutment hanging over’ the precipice. The tide of the Harlem River in Seis place is dammed by tho road with a wall on euch side, extending trom the Port Morris and Spuyte Duyvil Railroad to the Kingsbridge Hotel, conse- quently leaving only two holes about twenty-five feet each, which is called the Farmers’ Bridge, for the whole river to run through. This creates a very great pressure on the walls and forces the water, 3 run through with great rapidity. Cannot Heracp induce the authorities to put it in oper condition ? During the State campaign the distinguished candi. date in favor of buld-headed reform assured hig hearers again and again that if any attempt to “‘bull- dogo” them was made he wanted to know it, and he would make it so hot for the scoundrels who at- tempted it that they would be generally miserable and sorry they had been born. As no specific charges have been made since the election, and the champion has not been called upon to make good his threat, we take it for granted that there was no “bull-dozing’”’ done in Massachusetts, General Butler, however, hag and politicians into believing that Massachusetts cap- italists “bull-dozed" the poor voters and forced them to vote against Butler. If there was any undue infit used by anybody it was more likely to be found in favor of Butler, who has notoriously ‘“bull-dozed”’ r ie men Boer | ces within his control ever since he in public life.
