I NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1878—TRIPLE SHEET. n FINANGAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Active but Weak. GOLD 100 1-8 A 100 1-4 A 100 1-8, Government Bonds Dull, States Steady and Railroads Lower. Money on Call Easy at 21-2a 3 1-2 Per Cent. Wary Srager‘ } Mowpar, Dec, 9—6 P. M. ‘The weather to-day being particularly congenial to the habits of the familiar water fowl it was highly eppropriate that the bearish element should proceed to make ‘ducks and drakes” of the money which whilom credulous bulls had invested in the coal stocks. This they did.by slashing at the anthracite fancies after a manner that at one time created » difference of 2 per cent in Delaware and Lackawanna and of 1% per cent in Morris and Essex between the highest and lowest points of the day. At the close the latter stock had recovered one-half per cent, while the Delaware fancy was left in the ‘dol- firums” of,no recovéry at all. The main inter- est of to-day’s market impinged, as it were, upon these two securities. In tho early hours the price of Delaware and Lackawanna advanced 1% per cent, while Morris and Essex declined about thesame amount; in later hours the tables were turned—Delaware stock fell and Morris and Essex rose. There were reasons for this eee-sawing, which we proceed briefly to give. Reports were early in circulation that the Delaware and Lackawanna com- pany were taking legal measures to disembarrass thomn- selves of the disastrous lease which they had made with the Morris and Eesex line, and which Inst year had cost them in the shape gf a dead loss the round sum of $1,250,000, The very anticipation of sucha release, even at the cost of a breach of contract, brought in buyers and the price advanced. Unfor- tunately for themselves these credulous speculators lost sight of the fact that the whole report was a re- hash of an old story which was made todo yeoman service 4ome two years ago. About that time the con- ditions of the lease referred to were critically cx- amined by legal experts and the opinion was arrived at that the document, having not only received the consent of the two companies but the ratification of tho Now Jersey Legislature, was, so to speak, iron bound and copper fastened arid beyond any possibility of rupture at the handa of the Delaware company. If ‘we remember rightly legal opinions were also given at the time that the ten million mortgage was being launched that the lien of the MoMis and Essex road upon the coal companies’ property held a priority ‘io the contemplated mortgage itself, and that the Mor- ris and Essex company could enter into possession of the lessee’s road if the conditions of the lease failed to be carried out." The memory of operators being brushed up as to these particulars # change of opin- ion set in as to the value of both stocks, and the day ended with Morris and Essex recovering about one percent of its loss and Delaware and Lackawanna * gelling at the lowest point of the day. Railroad shares were less animated and changes in quotations were trivial. The Northwesterns were firmly held, losing but a fraction, although it was reported that the Exchange court athlete had given a fresh exhibi- tion of his pedestrian powers by skipping out of some ten or twelve thousand shares. Lake Shore ended where it began, though, from the deal of wash- ing done, traders in it must have left it with clean bands. Western Union lost one per cent and closed weak. Speculatars upon a two per cent divi- dend are beginning to think that they have reckoned without their host, or, more correctly, without the certainty of any sid from the Executive Committec, which meets on Wednesday. All hopes of « cantelope cutting are for the present abandoned. Wabash gained one per cent upon the day’s work, responsive to the scheme which points to a connection with the Grand Trunk of Canada and a through route to Montreal, and the rest of the market remained with- out feature. Mr. Secretary Sherman makes his seventy-fourth call for $5,000,000 of five-twenty bonds of 1865, coupons and registered, the interest upon which ceases March 9, 1879; and other telegrams from Washington notify us that the currency tinkers in Congress are busily engaged in suggesting repairs to the existing financial policy of the government by the introduction of new bills.
