NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1873—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Less Ac- tive and Feverish. GOLD QUIET AT 100 1-8, Goverment Bonds Firm, States Dull and Railroads Strong. MONEY ON CALL 4 A 8% PER CENY, cemnsnnpinittctiectintt Wax. Sraxet, } ‘Touxspar, Nov. 12-6 P. M. ‘The Stock Exchange presented thie morning one of "in which dulness was the rule and activity the exception. A matter of widespread ‘financial interest, and one vastly more important than the speculative squabbles of bulls and bears in the Board room, was the action of the Clearing House upomthe important subject of resuming specie pay- those “off day: ments, The details are given in our news columns. ‘The action of the banks, as expressed through their Clearing House, shows a firm determination to recog- nize on and after the day of resumption the absolute convertible values of gold coin and greenbacks, while it offers the coldest of shoulders to the emasculated silver dollar which foisted upon the country by the last Congress. This coin, when presented for de- posit, the banks claim the right ot accepting or de- clining as they may see fit, or as their own private and the public interests may demand, and inasmuch as the present value is measureably below that of vither greenbacks or gold they propose to receive it wlely as aspecial deposit and to return it to the de- positor in kind. In a word, bank vaults are about to thange their tenantse—gold as a special deposit is to move out and enter into general circulation; silver as & special deposit is to move in, and from all appear- ances lead the life of a hermit in musty bank cellars. And there it bids fair to stay until by act of Congress it gete partial liberty through being made a subsid- lary coin or by the sanio power is placed in the melt- tng pot once more and reissued with an intrinsic valuo tqual to that of gold. The stock market to-day calls lor little comment. “A lower market early in the day was supplemented by higher one later on, which tarried considerable strength with it, although the top | excheq notch of values was not adhered to at the end. There "waa special drive at Lake Shore by the bow window people, who are particularly jubilant over the report of rate cutting in the matter of passenger traflic, slthongh it is an open secret that @ like imputation against some of the roads has existed for weeks back. [It issimply an old scarecrow redressed and brought Into prominence. The coal carriers exhibited notable strength, s fractional rise being attained in Delaware and Lackawanna and a substantial one in Morris and Espex. ‘The'‘cold snap” of last: week improved the Coal business temporarily, particularly in Boston and adjacent towns, but the subsequent rise in the ther- ‘mometer has flattened it all out again; consequently to-day’s firmness can scarcely be attributed to that source. A small improvement late in the day marked dealings in Western’ Union and the grangers, but was Rot of sufficient, consequence to relieve the day from the stigma of excessive dulness. The opening, highest, lowest and closing priges of stocks and gold at the New York Stock Exchange to- day were as follows:— Highest.
