. “quietude which “had preceded it. “the figures to a price where they will “stick.” FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Pea ; The Stock Market Fairly Ac- tive and Strong. GOLD STEADY AT 100 1-4. Government Bonds Strong, States’ Dull and Railroads Firm. MONEY ON CALL EASY AT 5A 4 PER CENT. RAEN WALL STREET, } Wepnespay, Nov. 6—-6 P.M. The State election having come and gonte,-and its record for either good or evil being signed, sealed and delivered over to the archives of the bygones, the atock market to-dey relapsed into the state of semi_ If wanting in activity it was not wanting in strength, and in this Goliath-like virtue the whole market participated in Breater or less degree. Most. notably was this the case with the Northwesterns and Union Pacific, and in connection with the firmness in these securities a curious tale was told, Water and oil have been made to mix, the lion and the lamb (questions as to which is the lion, and which is the lamb will not ‘be deemed impertinent) have lain down together, and Mr. Vanderbilt and Mr. Gould have entered into a grand combination for a great transcontinental line of railway ftom ocean to ocean, Central and Hudson, Lake Shore, Northwest and the Pacific roads are the various links and the “demni- tion total” is to be under the exclusive control and management of Mr, Vanderbilt, Such was the story partially known to the street and discussed in the crude form given above. There was no positive in- formation as to how much of truth or falsity it con- tained, but it requires mention as a topic that elicited attention as well as considerable orders to buy the stocks in question, It has been a theory for a long time back that Mr. Gould has been looking to the creation of a through line which would relieve him from the burden of Union Pacitic and foster his “Northwestern interests, but insurmountable obstacles interfering between Chicago and the Atlantic seaboard have defeated the scheme. An alliance with Mr. Vanderbilt, offensive and defensive, which would have for its basis*the securing of the Lake Shore and Central and Hudson roada as integral links in the chain, would at- tain the desired end, besides constituting the most formidable and perhaps the most profitable railroad monopoly the world ever saw. ‘There was nothing, however, in the price of Lake Shore to suggest that auy such plan was even contemplated, for the fluctua- tions were small and the closing price but a shade better than the opening one. In fact, Lake Shore is hard to move. ‘The large re@ipts of grain ut the lake ports, the satisfactory business being done by the road, and the fact that a round sum of money, appli- cable to a dividend, has becn earned, all fail to push 80 many promises have been made heretofore, and they have been go often broken, that speculators may be excused if they have lost faith. With the exception that Northwest preferred and Union Pacific gained 1 per cent during the day thé rest of the list showed. little alteration und closed at figures pretty nearly identical with those with which it had begun. ‘The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks and gold at the New York Stock Exchange to- day were as follows :— ‘Opening. The examination in the case of Anthony De Greif and Carl Tracea, members of the firm of De Greiff & Co., and their attorney, Hugh J. Begley, charged with conspiracy to ga possession of and destroy certain papers with which the United States government sought to charge the firm with defrauding the cus- toms, was continued before United States Commis- sioner Shicld¥ yesterday. The entire session wa consumed in the cross-examination of the principal witness for the government, John W. Brittingham, There was but little change in the direct testimony of the witness as already published in the Heranp, and but few new facts were developed. In reply ly to ques. tions put by Genera] Foxter Brittingham described at Jength the papers said to have been purchased, consist. ing rindi '¥ of invoices and letters, He had a list of the papers required and Schurman had a similar one. When Schurman got the papers from Begley lie and witness went together to a lager beer saloon, whera they remained half an hour. There — again com- red the papers with the list and drank some beer, but could not state how much of the half hour waa ge pe in the Urgent tong of beer and how much in the comparision of papers. One invoice was tise. ing, and Schurman said that Begley had assured him it was of no use, as it was a Custom House invoice. Each of the papers had a hole punched t) rh the number, Further examination was at this point adjourned to the 8th inst. THE VANDERBILT WILL. The contest over the will of Commodore Vander. bilt was continued yestergay before the Surrogate. ‘Mr. Augustus Schell was present for a short time during the morning session in company with Mr William H. Vanderbilt. Mrs. La Bau was the only lady present. Mr. Harry Allen, & grandson of the Commodora was the first witness called. Tt was proposed to ex amine him as to the deceased's fondness for tobacco, but the Sarrogate ruled the ‘offer out on the ground that the memorandum of the witnesses to be called stated that it was proposed to show by Mr. Allen that deceased was easily influenced ge his relatives. * Mr. Allen was questiened on this topic but could give no evidence of importance. Dr. Edward H, Dixon, a medical export, was called and his examination was not conciuded when the Court adjourned, As in the examinations of Petzold and Venderweyde, much time was consumed in cliciting explanations of common terms concerning scientific and technical terminology. A copy of the so-called atttopey was handed to the witness and he was examined to the same effect as the other medical experts. Nothing new was develo) but the Doctor corroborated the testimony of Dr. Petsold and Dr, Vanderweyde, nnn RESCUED FROM THE FLAMES. The four story building No. 202 East Thirticth street, rented as a boarding house by Constant Sel- fort, was discovered to be on fire shortly after twa o'clock yesterday morning. The policeman on the post sounded an alarm and a few minutes later the district engines arrived and got to work. Ladders were taixed to the windows on the upper floors, and the firemen, working their way through the smoke, found two men named age Grd and Diengene in one of the cooms lying on a bed nearly suffocated, The mipt wore carried to the street, Whore ambttincer wine in waiting, end Maken ty Dallevue Moxpttal where restoratives ror xuceesafally applied.
