Most of the celebrities of the Parisian stage contributed their talent to render the occasion one worthy of remembrance. Taken as a whole it was such a treat as is rarely to be met with even in this gayest of capitals, WHO WERE THERE. When the fact is mentioned that Schnei- der, Sara Bernhardt, Celine Chaumont, Jeanie Granier, Marie Heilbron, Judic and Theo, to say nothing of the leading male artists of the great theatres, either sang or recited pieces, the readers of the Hxnarp can judge of the merit and variety of the entertainment. Refreshments were profusely served during the evening and an excellent supper was given to five hundred invited guests, among whom were noticed the Prince of Orange, Count Zichy, Marquis de Tanboy, Sardou, Octave Feuillet and Ar- sene Houssaye. MAYNOOTH COLLEGE ON FIRE, THK INSTITUTION NARROWLY ESCAPES DE- STRUCTION—SAVED BY THE DUBLIN FIRE- MEN—TWO WINGS OF THE NEW BUILDING DESTROYED, LOSSES TO THE COLLEGE AND THE S8IU- DENTS. [BY CABLE TO THE HERALD. Dosim, Nov. 2, 1878. The Roman Catholic Ecclesiastical Col- lege of Maynooth, county Kildare, narrowly escaped destruction by fire yester- day. It was not at first known how the fire originated, bat when discovered it had already made considerable headway, and owing to the absence of proper pro- vision for such an emergency it could not be got under control till the arrival of engines and firemen from Dublin. The fire broke out in the new quadrangle, a building which has been erected within the past few years, and it spread rapidly. The most alarming rumors were circulated in the city during the day and Captain In- gram, of the fire brigade, and a strong force of men, with several engines, were promptly despatched by rail to the scene of the disaster. DUBLIN FIREMEN AT WORK. The firemen worked vigorously, and were actively assisted by the students and towns- people, and after some hours the fire was got under control and several threatened portions of the building saved. By mid- night it was completely extinguished, but two wings of the building, the southern and western ends, were destroyed. The library suffered considerable damage and some val- uable books were destroyed, but although the students lost all their personal effects, and some of them were rescued with diffi- culty, no lives were lost. A NARROW ESCAPE. , The buildings are massive stone struc- tures, with long corridors, and the students are locked in at night, making it difficult to escape in case of sudden fire, After an investigation the Dublin Fire Department ascertained that the fire was caused by the overheating of the warming apparatus. The loss is estimated at $50,000. Great sym- pathy is felt for the students, and subscrip- tions will probably be opened in all the Catholic churches in Ireland to-morrow for their relief.
