THE COURTS. Results of a Widow’s Over- weening Confidence. A STRANGE STORY. Paternal Feelings that Were Cu- riously Revolutionized. —e——— A atory yesterday came to light in the courts, whiob, if true, is somowhat remarkable. Mary Bow- man, & widow, who formerly resided in Sullivan county, appears as complainant, In March, 1876, she bays, Andrew D. Purtell, who then resided in the a neighborhood, came to-her, her husband having died shortly before, and offered to assist her in mov- ing trom Sullivan county to Hoboken, N, J., as she then contemplated doing, at the same time professing great regard both for her dead husband and herself, Believing in his protestations of friendship, and boing @t this time peculiarly in need of a trusty adviser, Bho at once accepted his proffered services, and from that timo forward placed implicit confidence in his Actions and words. She saya that at the time of her removal from Sullivan county she gave Partell $3,5v0, together with some papors, to take care of for her, it being understood, of course, that ho was to return the same whenever she required it, This money. however, sho says, he nover roturued but Bppropriated to his own use. Sho then gocs on to tay that sn April, 1876, Purtell called at her house with a stranger and stated that as she needed a barpet the stranger would turnish her with one, and he accordingly directed him to tako the measure- ment of her rooms, which the stranger proceoded to do, Purtell told her the carpet woulu cost $300, and as the stranger owed him that amount she might pay Bim the $300. This she did, bat, as sho further alleges, bus never since’ soon the stranger, the carpet or the money, On the 27th of May, of tho Same year, as she continues, William G. Ward, her banker, gavo Purtell, as her agent, $1,820 of her money to be delivered to hor, but which be has since forgoiten to do aod still retuins. In August of tno same yoar she banded him a bundred dollar bill to get changed for ber, but with th me apparent forget. Julness Purtell forgot to return the bill or the change, Loo on ee contrary, as she asserts, converted ‘me to his own use, Io October or September of of she uame yonr, the exact date she fails to remem- fF, Mr. A. ©. Batts, her attornoy, in Monticetlo, Sul- Rein county, guve Purtell $100 of her money, as her agent, to bo delivered to her. This sum, tegether with a check for $100, which she gave to bin to get cushed, was, a3 sho further alleges, hkowise appropriated by Partoll and never accounted for. In tue mouth of September, 1876, being desirous of visiting Sullivan county, she intrusted Purteil with $1,000 to deiray the expenses of the expedition, and altbough tne expenses of tho trip only amounted to $20 she has never since, as she furtbor alleges, geen a ponny of the remuning $980, nor docs kvow what was done with it. At one time she ented to exchange a piece of silk which she had, jor another piece of a different pattern. she intrusted to him for that purpose, but bas never from thut day laid eyes on tho silk or guy other ek trom nim. He would, she says, often Promise to pay her back ‘these — sevoral bums, but uever Kept his promises, and Would toil ber that he hud invested tho money in bis bi a8, Where it was safo and bearing interest. if ‘the early part of 1877, when she became impa- ‘made Various excuses of boing cramped and ppointmonts to pay her, but never kept them. taces jurther that some time after he had ob. tained the $1,820 relerred to he admitted to her that it, but pretended that as she did yt poed the movey he had tnvested 11 in Long Island for wer, where it Wus sale, She says she provested and told him bad no right to Invest her money, and she says he has never told ber how or where the me eae invested aud she now knows nothing bate In another affidavit Mrs, Bowman makos a farther charge that Purteli came to her and told her that his property was about to be sold uouer a foreclosure wad that he wust Dave $3,600 to save it. io told hertnat he bad no money, but had large claims standing out wht ceuld oot collect, and if she would let bin ve the money he would, alter paying the mortgage, exvoule to her apother mortzaze on property which he owned at Long Braneb, worth from $15,000 to $25,000, Relying upon these promises aud represcn- (ations she guve Dim the required sum; but, aus she Charges, bo iuilad to execute the mortgage, und sho has “been uble to get any security tor loun, and what property he did my sold and he is ow without wer to execuio any mortgige, In a third aflidavie ra, Bowman #6 ys that Purtell wrongfally converted to hw own use $9,500 of ber porsoval property, being she Value of certuin certilicates of stock of the Bunk America owned by her, and which be procured {row her on a representation that be wished to bor- tow some money from Mr. Ward, ber banker, aua do- sired 10 deposit these certificutes as colloteral and would roturu them in a few days, Contrary to this jerstandiug, however, she states he took tue stock to Mr. Ward ond directed Lim to@sell it, and that the money, amounting to $5,470, realized from such sale be converted to his own use, und heveraccuunted for.
