Mr. Belden therevpon wrote aletter to the Stock Exchange—of which tall particulars will be found in another column—dis- claiming any participation in Messrs, Haar’s trans- actions and stating that he had suffered by that firm to a considerable amount. As there was a large buying “anger the rule” stocks were vaturally strengthened and a general advance ensued, which Jasted until the demand was satisfied, when the Market became weak and closed at neerly the lowest prices of the day. The deciine was ennancea by the alarming nature of the despatches {rom Europe, whieh report another large fatiare, a panic in the Glasgow iron market and a heavy tall in prices inthe Paria Bourse. To-morrow isthe fortnightly settling day on "Change, and it ts feared that several firms wili be unabie to tide over, There are also rumors of aiMea! in the Mavchester cotton market, and sin- ister reports were prevalent as toa large Onancial in- stitution here whieh nas just been investi- gated by the Bank Examiners. Under these fombinea influences the market dropped quickiy at the close, the principal sufferers being Lake Shore, Western Union, the grangor and coal stocks, Rumors were again rife as to a disruption of the coai combination, but it is almost certain that the meeting to be held to-merrow will be harmonious in preserving their compact for the remainder of the Present year. Whetver it will lust until the 1st of April depenas upon the Lebigh folks and upon the Willingness of ihe others to make concessions to them, Secretary Snerman’s action yesterday con- tinues to depress gold, but foreign exchange was ad- Vanced 10-day above the specie importing potat, and it te not unlikely that the Baak of England directors wili advance their rate again to meet any further drain for New York account.
