ANXIETY aT GLASGOW. The Hesavy's correspondent at Glasgow telegraphs:—‘‘The failureofthe Bank of the City of Glasgow undoubtedly exercises ade- pressing influence on the shipping interests on the Clyde. The failure of Pottér, Wil- son & Co., whose suspension was an- nounced last week, was a staggering blow; but it now transpires that Mr. Potter, the head of the firm, was a director of the Bank of the City of Glasgow, and had received for his house £180,000 ($900,000) in advances from the bank. The shipping business was extremely dull before this crash, and rumors were rife concerning firms in the shipbuild- ing trade. The only suspension since, how- ever, has been W. Simons & Co., of Renfrew. MaX BE WEATHERED, “It is now believed here that even if others are involved they will weather the storm. It is asserted that the bank ad- vanced to Wright £500,000 ($2,500,000); to Salmond, £100,000 ($500,000), and to Tay- lor, £170,000 ($850,000), all of whom were directors of the rotten bank.” . DISQUIETING RUMORS. The money market is depressed and un- easy in consequence of persistent rumors of further mercantile embarrassments. These rumors, though denied and untraceable, create a gloomy feeling throughout the king- dom. The rumors affect a Scotch bank and a Lancashire bank, as well as various mér- cantile concerns in London and in the provinces, DISTRESS IN THE COTTON REGION. The Messrs.
