FINANCIAL AND COMMERCTAL The Stock Market Active and Strong. GOLD 100 1-2 A 100 8-8. Government Bonds Strong, States Dull and Railroads Irregular Money on Call Easy at11-2 a 2 Per Cent, Watt Srreet, } Moxpay, Sept. 23-6 P, M, The market was unexpectedly active to-day and Prices were unexpectedly strong, at least to tho: whe ignored the signs of improvement that were visible during the latter part of the past week. To otner than ebronic bears (wool dyed and warranted motto fade under the brightest sunlight of an a vancing market) the improvement this morning w: ‘but the natural result of the bullish feeling which is beginning to pervade stock circies. While it 18 con- ceded that prices are rigged to suit the schemes of a hanaful of leading stock gamblers, it 1s not to be de- nied that their plans are founded upon an astute study ofthe present and prospective state of trade and of the political and tnanctal outlook of the country at large, There is reason to believe that tLe control. lors of speculation regard the future as promising profitable returns to buyers at current prices, and there is tho same reason to believe that they aro practically backing up this opinion, Although much of the strength and a large proportion of this morn- ing’s transactions were duc toa covering of shorts by refugees from the boar side, it was equally appa- rent that converts to the bull side, as weil as the bull contingent itself, which never changes front, were the paramount force in the market. Under thoir auspices, and a persistent demand for the more activo kinds of stocks, there was a general appreciation in values {rom the opening to the end of the day. Most pepecially benefited by the rise were the St. Paul and Northwestern properties. It may be (as was gos- Biped by the street) that Jay Gould was pickling a rod for Mr, Keene, or that Mr. Morgan bad tn vicw one of his historical dives into speculation, from which be proverbially comes out quicker, dryer and with more profit than any others of his stock Jobbing coadjutors, or that the advance was mainly attribut- able to a more cheer!ul regard of the futuro, certain it ig that, while the grangers bore the heat and burden of the day’s speculation, they at the same time bore off the palm for improvement, Lake Shore, moder- Ately animated, was weak und strong by turns, but, when it happened to be neither, sulked at figares which were steady at loast, Burlington and Quincy and Central and Hudson, though limited as to deal- ings, were strong and advanced as to price. Tho re- porsed increased earnings by these rouds sufficiently gooount for their strength. A report provaiied that the Euglish stockholders of Reading are much exer- @ised as to the unsatisfactory condition of the com- pany and are about to apply torareceivership, A de- cline in the stock irom 16% to 1534 within a few days would seem to give seme color to the rumor, though nothing authoritative is known. Beyond an occa- sional set-back in the general market prices were stubbornly sustained the day through and tinal dea! ings were mage at nearly the bighest Ogures of the session.
