“PINANCLAL AND COMMERCIAL An Irregular and Dull Mar- ket for Stocks. GOLD WEAK AT 1001-4. Covernment and State Bonds Quiet—Railways Firm and Higher. —-—___ MONEY ON CALL 11-270 2 PER CENT. iene ‘ Wau. Steve, } Moxpay, Sept. 9—6 P.M. To-day’s stock market bas beon dull and lopsided, with the maximum of interest shifted intothe granger specolation, whero it remained the day through. The minimum of attention stragglea off into the rest of the list, with Delaware and Lackawanna and Miehi- gan Central the recipients of the larger part of the activity leit over in the unequal division. As bintea, the Wisconsin stocks absorbed tho lien/s share of the day’s busines: nd this at prices which advancea in @ fractional way on opening ones, and which, with the exception of the Northwest common stock, were somewhat higher at the end than at tho commencement, There is no reason to change the opinion, heretofore expressed, that the Wisconsin stocks are being absorbed quictly, gradually and cheaply, as a prelude to a bail movement, Above ail it is desirable to obtain them cheaply, and Dence the necessity of the trequent and spasmodic raids which depress prices without sacrificmg stock. ‘A sufficiency of shares having been laid in at low fig- ures the future will take cure of itself. As happens at Kettledrum’s, when Brown’s young men, with an eye to possible and prospective parties, ply fashion- able dowagers with tea.and then set them to draw before the parlor fre, speculators in the grangers seem to be acquiring these properties with u keen eyo to a remunorative future. While the railroad market was strong the coal carriers, as exemplified by Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, were weax. From 523¢ at the opoming the price declined to 503% at the close, Tho failure of the Oxford Fur- nace Company, by -which the coal company was Feported to lose some $250,000, was given as the immediate reason for the deciine, and the same remained uurceovered from although iater statements represented the coal carriers to be fully secured, A circular whieh represents the views of certain members of the Committee om Reconstruction of the Ohio and Alississippi Railroad Company has been prepared and will be published ina day or two. It would appear from the statement that the neglect of the sub-com- mittee to carry out the recommendations et the Re- construction Committee as directed is exposing the road to “tmmunent port! and disaster.” itis con- fessed that appearances lead to the belic{ that the Bal- timore and Ohio Railroad, through obtaining their own Vice President as receiver and by controlling the Boara of Directors ‘who havo obtained the entire direction of its traffic and polioy,’’ have, to all intents and pur- poses, gubbied the whole concern, An appeal is there- fore made to the bond and stockholders of the Ohio and Mississippi road to rescue the property from this control by making “a settlement with its several classes of creaitors.”’ ‘This requires— First—To clear away the devauit on the first ‘mort- gage. Second—To effect the same result with the secona mortgage. Thrird—Vo permit a full reconsideration of the Spring- field purchase, which is required by their bond- holders, and also iu the 1nterest of the stockholders, To obtain this desirable result it is urged that, tnas- much as the stock ts chiefly held in this city, the va- .eancies to occur in tho board of ¢irectors on the 10th of October shall be filled by “Now York gentlemen.’* * hat something should be done seems to bo of para- mount importance; that anything will be done is \mgeethan aoubtiul, _RANGH OF FLUCTUATION, Following are the highest, lowest aud Orat pricesof activo stocks today, together with the closing quota- tions: High.
