“THE BEVLEROPHON BALL, Admiral Inglefield’s Entertainment at Newport Yesterday. A BRILLIANT SCENE. Beauty and Fashion on Board the Man-ot-War. {e¥ TELEGRAPH TO THE HERALD.) Newrorr, R. 1., Sept. 7, 1878. ‘The grand reception given on board of the flagship Bellerophon, tbis afteraoon, by Admiral Ingletield and Cipiain St. George D’Arcy Irvine to their friends in’ Newpor, was a complete success, und the officers were rewarded for tbe pains they bad taken im decorating the bug man-of-war, really converting it into an elaborate bailroom, with all the paraphernslia of naval wariare in sight, The weather was very threatening antil this aiternoon, when the sombre clouus slowly dispersed and the glorious sunlight was seca forthe first time jo threc days, It was the intention ot the Admiral to have tho ball “rain or shine’? and to carry out his Programine in cage tho elements were contrary to the desires of many of his friends. He bad Guused several additional suits of sails to be arrangea above the decorations, so that im caso it rained, even as persistently as it did on Thursday, when the entertainment wus post- Poued, it would be a long time odelore the merry dancers woul1 be aunoyod by it. The ship’s launches and gigs were brought tnto use about two o’clock this Aliernoon, and with the addition of a tug chartered for the. occasion the visitors were conveyed from Commercial aud Ferry wharves to the sbip, the frat ‘nstelment arriving at about three o’clock, They were met at the entrance by the Admiral and staff, Captain Irvine and other officers of the snip aod cor- dtully welcomed to tho entertainment that had been provided in recognition of the numerous courtesies extended by the summer residents, who, as will be seen below, were weil represented.
