FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL A Stronger Market in Wall Street. GOLD 102 5-8 A 102 1-2 A 102 5-8, Government Bonds Firm, States Higher and Railroads Strong. —_—— MONEY ON CALL EASY AT 6.46 PER CENT. —_——_——. Watt Street, } Tuurspat, Nov. 15—6 P. M. The improvement which showed itself yesterday Upon the Stock Exchange was well supported to-day, ‘and tended generally toward a higher scalo of prices, Unfortunately the advanco is meaningless, since it Qrises from the manipulations of a market tbat is entirely im the hands of professional brokers of the “baser sort,” and one that receives no recognition from the more important speculators, ‘his latter class manifest but little desire to touch the market, ‘ither for the long or short account, aud is con- tent to leave the formation of prices to the hot polloi, ‘Who just now seem to be working out of their bearish notions and translerring their allegiance to a bull Speculation, This change is particularly noticeable in the granger sbares, which, being thought better of every day, are improving their market values @ccordingly. The advanced figures miade to-day throughout the list were principally due to the excep- Vonal strength of Michigan Central. This strength, in turn, was purety artificial and resulted from the over- sold condition of the stock, which has been brought bout by short sales of prominent bow window bears, ‘The situation invited the attention of the bull interest, which (waking from its apathetic state for a brief Peried) engineered a sharp and sudden upward turn, which carried quotations from 60% to 64%. The closing price was lower by the amount of the fraction, but the popular supposition is that the ventursome Dears will be made to “squeal,” even as Mr. Gould was Made to do some few weeks back, This flurry in Michi- gan Central constituted the only disturbing factor in the day’s work and was welcomed as B ready relief by the commission men, not only because it created some trade in the stock itself, but because it broke up the monotony of the rest of the market, As simply referable to this spurt Lake Bhore and the Western stocks took upon themselves the garb of a fresh activity aud appeared in tlie “Sun- Gay’s vest’? of an unexpected advance, There was tome little improvement in the remainder of the list As well, arising from sympathy with and the “slop over’? trom the better feeling whicn had get in. Even the toal stocks crawled up afew fractions from the mag. Bevism of good company, though neither the condition of their trade nor their finuncial status warrantsa bolief 1n any other improvement than such as would result from the influence of a galvanic spasm. To sum up, the market remains as it has done for weeks past, an arena for professional dealers, wuo go to work as sys- tematically as the croupiers aud cappers of a fash- Jonable hell The “play”? is confined to a family party, dn whose gaius or losses the public takes no interest, fund the ‘chips’ lost to-day aro won to-morrow, with “quits,’? as a general thing, cried at the ead of the week, Howto get out of this unprofitable slough 1s the question, Whilo some believe that an increased dusinuess to be enjoyed by the railroads will start a frosh and vigorous speculation, others believe that: Stock gambling 18, at least for tbe present, ‘played out.” “Time,” the poet declares, “seis all things even,’’ but brokers, who look to the market for their daily bread, do not need ‘‘time,” but “money” sub- Stantives, which, in their cases at least, are not prac- tically convertible terma, OPESING PRICES.
