10 ROBERTS ON GONKLING. What the Utica Ex-Congressman Says About the Senator. ARROGANT, QUARRELSOME, UNFAITHFUL. His Relations to the Back Pay Bill and a Utica Savings Bank. SECRETS OF CUSTOMS MOIETIES. Tbe piquant and lengthy interview with Senator onkling, which appoared in yosterday's Heranp, created no little sengation in republican circles. His open declarations and bis free criticisms on men and measures were as much discussed among the demo- cratio leaders as among those of his own party. The Hena.y’s course being to present all sides to the public a reporter was yesterday commissioned to interview Mr, Eilis H. Roberts, ex-Congressman from Oneida county, against whom Senator Conkling was unusually sovero, Whon asked if he desired to speak on the subject of Sonator Conkling’ romarks Mr. Roberts said:— WHAT MR. REPORTS FROM GEORGIA, FLORIDA, NORTH Cat- OLINA, MISSISSIPPI, ARKANSAS, ETC. + Savannau, Ga, Nov. 9, 1877, Goorgia crop report for October:—Eighty-five re- plies were received from fitty-tive counties, Tho woather the past month bas been favorable, but not as favorable as last year. Some sections have beon visited by heavy and irequent rains, In the most northern sections of the State there has been a light frost, but no damage has beon done to the cotton crop, Three-fourtbs of the crop has been picked and pick- ing will be over generaliy by the 1st of December. On light sangy uplands drought and rust have done their work very cflectually, and a very small yield from these lands has been realized; but on bottom lands tho yiold has been greater than last year, due entirely to the very late fall, Tho out-turn of the State, how- ever, 14 set down at five to six per cent leas than last fourteen conuties, Tho weather has not been as favor- ablogs Inst year for gathering thecrop. Very heavy and Continue: rains throughout tue fall, No frost h occurred in this state, wo-thirds of tho crop is gathered and picking will be ovor by the Ist of Decem- Der. Portions of this state have suffercd from rust avd caterpillar, and there isa general complaint of rotting of bolls trom too much wet, and not only is the quantity cut off but the quality has been injured. The yield of the State is ostimated at from eight to ten Per cent tess than last year, Norroue, Va, Nov. 9, 1877. The Cotton Exchange reports the condition ot cotton jn Virgioia and North Carolina as follows aaracier of tho woather since October 1 bas been generally quite favorable, with the complaint iu some localities of too much rain during the latter part of the month. No frost of any consequence has been reported, the light {frost experienced: being rather beneticiai than otherwise. About half of the crop is reported a8 having been picked, and picking will cenge about December 1. Six report tho weather fair during the monta. Filty eight report very wet and unfavorable weathor during the month, mucn more so than lust year at the samo time. Light frost 1s reported trom some sections, but no damage was occasioned. Tho following 1s the October report of the Nashvillo Department of the Natioval Cotton Exchange:—MMid- die Tennessee—Thirty-five replies have been rece!ved, In regard to tho weather thirty-two roport 1 very good and threo that there has been too much rain; twenty-nine say it has been more favorable than last year and six that it has been less tavorable; thirty- three report frost, but no dama; no frost, Kiguteen report icked and that pioking will about Hreoember L ‘en report a third ploked, and thas picRing will finish by the last of December. Seven report a fourth picked, and that the ensire crop will be picked avout the last of January. Six report the yield thé same as last year ; nine that it is much bet- ter, with a probable increase of from 50 to 75 por xteen a probable increase of from 25 to 30 per toree a probable incroase of 10 percent, and one a decrense of 20 per cont. The acreage ts not 80 large, but the yield 18 much better than Jast year. North Aablama:—Twenty-eight replies have been received. Nineteen report too much rain, and nine favorable weather; nineteen report the woather less favorable than Inst your, and nine more favorable, Twenty-five report irost, but 10 damage, and threo no frost. The averago of the State shows a falling of 13 40-100 per cent. The docrease in yield 1s attributed to the drought in August. Owing to the late season there is very little stained cotton.
