NOT TO BE DAUNTED. | From bis earlier letters we know how, since bis de- parture from the Zanzibar coast, Mr, Stanley has tracked out a new route to the Victoria Niyauza; bow be has circumnavigated that great fresh water sea, do- termined the extent and elevation of its basin, and ex- Pored more fully than was in the power of speke aud Grant its chiel affluent; how he crossed the country to the Albert Luke, aud fually how, turning bis atien- won to Lake Tanganyika, u jons of 18 isited by Burton, Speke, ae jameron, and ascertained the curious upposed ouiflow toward the Lualaba was prising special correspondent had been only ding iu the steps of previous travellers, and at most sup- Plementing their imperiect exploravions, When, however, after crossing the country of the Manyema, to Nyangwe, he started on bis adventurous voyage vown the Lualaba be struck into a path that no Ku- Topean had traversed boiore him. This latter portion his Journey was at once the most eventful and the Most important; 1% will be in counection with tl identification of the Congo with the Lualaba that hi Jame as an explorer will be chiefly handed down to posterity, The credit of this great discovery he now Bhares in at least equal ure with bis predeces- dors, Dr, Livingstone and Cameron, STANLBY COMPLETELY SUCCRSSPUI. The missionary traveller was the first who came Upon the enormous fake and river system which oc- cupies the central depression of the Alrican continent to the west of Tanganyika, He belzeved to his dying day that he was working at the sources of tne Nile, Geographers at nome, who had access to information that was not within the reach of the lonely ceyas Were convinced that this could not be the dase. They turned to the enormous volume of water dist ed by the Congo into the Atlantio—gre: wb id, \han that of apy other river on the globe, with the ex- ception of the Amazon—as affording the true clew to ue destination of the Loalaba and its tributary streams, ‘his was practically authenticated by Cameron’s neusurement of the levels of the Lualaba and bis ourney across the watershed between it and the Zam- bes, But the mind is nover wholly satished with this pecies of inductive proof. Mr. Stanley bas set doubt at rest in the most convineimmg way. Embarking on the great stream below Nyangwe ho followed its course lor pb: monthe jn all its devious wanderings, fought his way through the bands shat attempted to oppose his progret bumerous rapids tuat were found where the stream >reuks through the coast ranges of mountains, and at last ad the satis{action of secing bis toils crowned with omplete success—of joining the far stretching, many >ranched Lualaba to the mighty trupk stream that 4ows down to the ocean below the Yeliala Falls, “A VERY HERCULES IN ENDURANCE AND COURAGE.” [From the Nashville ('enn.) [From the Panama Star aud Herald. } Late despatcues announce that this brave and baray Rdventurer has once more emerged trom the Alrican iter having passed through innu- and hardsbips, His return may almost be considered as that of ono risen from the dead, for few peuple entertained the hepe of ever se ing or even hearing of him again. It ts therefore due to such 4 pioneer as Stanley, following tne great ex- ample of Livingstone, that the world should unite to | | Erte peel do him honor, 1t may be considered a matter o¢ Small importance by many whethor Africa ts ever ex- plored and civilized or not. People ongaged in their own small affairs may {wil to appreciate either the im- Mediate or remote questions involved im the more per- fect knowledge of tbat vast region, which can alone ve gained through persona! sacrifice and individual de- Votion tu the cause of geographic research. It is sale to say that the vust majority of mankind have very littie interest in the matter, and that they read with lndiflerence whatever the explorers relate, The Niger, Lhe sources of the Nile, the wild races of savages, tho batural wealth of the country and a hundred other matters, a correct knowledge of which would add greatly to the fund uf general information, are looked upon with no more interest than the speculations of sone dreamer a8 to the probable inbabitants of Mars or of the moon, fut leaving on one side tuese indifferent masses there yet remain the intelli. gent minority, to whom the thirst for knowledge is a passion bever sated; by whom every contribution to the constantiy accumulating fund, in whatever de partinent, 18 regarded a biessing; aud for whom sach heroes a Stanley are content yo make sacrifices of nome, friends, society, tho lite iteeif—men and women nt toward that great tu. lure of possible accomplishment which lies beyond our ken in the ever fertile womb of Time. By these will hig orave and succesatul endeavors to open a pathway into the dark and trowning wilds of the bither- unknown continent bo appreciated and crowned With all praise and honor. The Course of Investment Securities—Govern- ment, State and Railroad Bonds, pert Wart Street, Sunpay, Nov, 4, 1877. The ocourrences in flvancial circles during the past ‘week were without spirit or signification. The lion of speculation which has been rampaging for the last three months has suddenly tamed down to the mangy slothiulness of a **show’? animal, and only emyiates the sucking dove in the gentleness of its roaring. Prominent among the reasons for this chango is the defection of Mr. Vanderbilt, or rather by: pudiation of all stories which have attributed to bim the posi- ‘th of chief trainer in the speculative menagerie, Lacking the “stirring vp”? which his wealth and influence were supposed to be exerting upon the mar- ket, popular interest subsided, and small operators, who were * disappointed in their man,’ seutiled out of the arena and of their stocks at the same time, So it came to pass that Mr. Vandervilt’s “card” acted like a purgative on prices and depleted the entire snare list. It did even more, for it seemed to check the willingness to speculate upon the part of large operators, and 1n this way to initiate a period of dulness such as has not been witnessed since the commencement of the bull movement in July. An- other quieting eause may be traced to the proceedings in Congress in regard to the Resumption and Si!ver bills and the doubt as to what effect will be produced upon financial matters by this | tion. Hence it is not :mprobable tbat speculation will remain dwarfed ‘until these disturbing factors are climinated from tho problem, either by some conclusive action or by boing passed over until mext session, Again, the diminished receipts of grain at the great entrepots have been disappointing, as showing that the Western farmers are less wiso than the typical burned child and are likely to repeat tne folly of pro- vious years by holding om to their stock of cereals for bigher prices, In spite, however, of the apathy which has fallen upon the warkot, prices have held up re- markubly woil, the net decline for the week averaging not more than two points and with final quotations pointing toward recovery. Protty much the entire business was confined to Western Union, the Vander- bilt properties and the grangers, while the rost of the list was as empty of interest as the head of Banquo’s ghost was of brains, Money on call ranged from 5 per cent to 1-32 and interest, the high rate being due to the calling in of loans in anticipation of November in- terests and dividends. On Saturday, however, the price fell back again to4 a5 per cent on tho reloase of fands from banks an4 financial institutions, and, under tho existing quiet market, ia likely to remain easy, TRANSACTIONS OF THE WRKK. ‘Tho following table represents the opening, highest and lowest sales, regular way, of tho principal stocks during the past week, tugether with the number of shares dealt in:— Wo.
