10 THE LOCAL CANVASS. Tammany Pits Augustus Schell Against John Morrissey. LIVELY ‘SCENES IN THE CONVENTION. aoe The Combination County Ticket Indorsed by the Independent Democrats. The itveliess polisical gathering of the present cam- Paign was the meeting of the Tammany Hall Seventh Senatorial District Convention, held Ist evening at Academy Hall in Third ue, to nominate a candi- date in lieu of Georgo W. McGlynn, who bas with- drawn from the canvass, Tho placo was crowded by the “short-haired” and silk stocking representatives Of tho Assembly districts in that Senatorial district. Coroner Croker, General Spinola, Colonel W. R. Roberts, Mr. Feitner, R. K. Morrison and others were Present, and precisely ht o'clock Augustus Schell called the assemblage to order by stating that it be- fame necessary tor the Convention to nominate a candidate for the Seventh Senatorial district because of Mr, McGlynn/s withdrawal, and the secfetary then ead that gentleman’s letter, written to Mr, Scholl on the 28d inst. stating his reacons for the step. Mr. Feitner, from the Eightecnth Assembly district, then'saia that it afforded him great pleasure to pre- sent to the Convention as its candidate for Senator a gentloman who had ever stood foremost in the ranks of the democracy in this city in weal or woe, and whose name would insure victory in the coming con. test. Ho méant Augustus Schoil. (Applause) Him the speaker nominated SECONDED BY GENERAL SPINOLA, General ¥rank Spinola slowly rose to his * and, pulling up nis shirt collar until the point®nearly touched his eyebrows, thrust one band forensically into thé bosom of his frock coat, and said that it w: raro priviloge for a convention to present to the people the name of so distinguished und famous a man as Augustus Schell; who was known to t democrasy from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from tho lakes to the Gulf. He was alike remarkable for his modesty and unflagging energy. He had always declined ofMfco un- Ul pow, when it was absolutery neces 'y that Tam- many should put into the fleld its most trusty man— one ol the well tried and ever taithful exponents of democratic princip! “Why,’? said General Spinola, ‘he bas been with Tammany for thirty years. its Sachem for many and at tho head of the National Democratic Committee for ten or twelve years, He {sno guch manag John Morrissey, the friend of tho mongrel combination, who has been weeping for a foeman worthy of bis steel. Wo havo given bim one to-night in Augastus Schell—(applause)—and in dolnig so have dealt bim a’ heavier biow than that whic! Yankee Sullivan struck him on Boston Common ears ago, Morrissey will need better seconds in this Battie tan he had on that occasion.”’ (Applause.) Voices {rom the body of the hall—How is Schell on te ndments? SpPinoLa—Sound ; sound as I am myzell, Axornzr Vorce—In the ssmoway Gerard 18? Spino.a—No; Mr. Scheil belicves in the right cf universal suffrage, and is as radical in that way as 1 am, and you could not ask moro than that. At this a middio-sged man of well developed physique, jpmped excitedly to his fees and said, “See here! & man and @ democrat, and I'm jamned if 1 ane tired of this silk stocking democracy jusiness, SPINOLA (majéstically)—You © «Dot delegate bere, sir! an officer to put that ruffian out, + Thero wi tir at the lower end of :ho;nall, and a couple of officers were seen making their way ‘toward the objectionabie *‘shorthair,’’ ‘The man and democrat, moving down another aisle, remarked, “Ob, I'll go out, of coarse!’ and then Gencral Spinola, as the man was bear tho door, deliy- ered, with outstretched arms, this denunciation ;— “Yhat fellow 18 a spy of the same kind as he who betrayed Robert Emmet!’? This was followed ty a porfect howl of rage from the throats of some of the ‘shoribairs’? who stood near the ontrance. What became of “the man and democrat’? did not transpire, General Spinola closed bis address immediately by announcing that it was the pride of his lifeto be the seconder of Augustus Scheli’s nomination, Mr. Foitner then put the question:—‘‘Allin favor of Augustus Schell as th ndidato of this convention for Senavor from th enth Senatorial District say e."? Tho nomination was made by vociferous ac- ation. MR SCHELL ACCEPTS THE NOMINATION. Mr. Sobell thon delivered & brief nddrese,-tn which he expressed his regret jor tho necessity {or Mr. Mc- Glynu’s witbdrawal ond his own nomination, But ho deciared bis determination to accept and go into the fignt to win for the democracy if possible. He urged tbe people togecurc democratic assemblymen of the proper typo, as three grave questions affecting the woltare of New Nork were to come up betore the next Legislature, These wore the Excise laws, tho constitutional amendments and the re-apportionment of the State On the first he was iu favor of an equitable and uniform law; on the second he said ho ‘was in favor of uaiversal suflerag: , and he earnestiy desired the re-apportionment in order that N York might have a fair representation in sho Legislature, Colonel RW. Robe and R, K. Morrison spoke substantially of the candidate and the Convention ad- Journed. GRORGE W. M’GLYNN’S WITHDRAWAI. The romors attributing the withdrawal of Mr. George W. McGlynn {rom the candigacy to an attack of Insantty are declared by his friends and re! to be utteriyiaise. For several years since he ts said to have suflered at intervals from nervous prostration, end the reason of his withdrawal was the assurance of bis physician thathe could notendure the /atiqgues and excitemenis of a political campaign, To escape the Importunities of Iriends who would induce him to re- frain from withdrawing, and to enjoy the rest and quiet which his physician ordered, he determined to Day a visit to some relatives at Geylorasville, pour Milferd, Conn., where he vow is with his wifo and “two obiidren, His relatives in this eity received @ letter from bim lvst night, stating that be owas in 1 bealth «and bad been Lf bepefited by thechange, Mr. McGlynn’s triends and Telatives who mako these explanations denounce the romors that he suflers under a temporary aberration of mind ns a lio emanating from poittical rivals, Gay- Jordevillo cannot be reached by telegraph, but Mr. McGlypn’s friends say they will communicate with Dim at once by mai and have bim personally reply bo tho ulleged baseless reports.
