—_ FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Active and Feverish. GOLD 102 3-4 A 102 5-8 A 102 3-4. Government Bonds Steady, States Higher and Railroads Weak. MONEY ON CALL QUOTED AT 7 PER CENT. e Wa. Srkext, } Tacnspar, Oct, 18—6 P. M. ‘The vox populi, eo far as it was possible to be repre- sented by street rumors, gave further tongue this morning to the general belief that the bull party bad been beavy sellers of stocks, A further important decline, which depressed Lake Shore to 67%, Western Union to 78% and Mienigan Central to 633, gave the keynote to the supposition, and the whole pack of Smaller traders was soon in full cry at the heels of the fleeting prices with @ pertinacity that is only bred among brokers and with an ardor in the chase, that, Otrected in a vulpine way, would astonish the mem- bers of the Queens county hunt, It is possible, hot r, that the belief in a goneral selling out of the bull party may be exaggerated and lead to the serious mistake of selling the market short’ Tho sharp turn upward this afternoon has ready proved seriously convincing to the buoyant bears of this morning that short sales were a mistake, and ap- pearances aro that more converts will be made to- morrow. The truth appears to be that some of the prominent operators of the bow-window party, taking alarm at the frequent recurrence of “irregularities” among financial people and fearing an extension of the taint to quarters which would develop serious con- sequences, have determined to ‘pull down the ‘biinds” for the present upon the bull speculation and at the same timo secure the handsome profits offering, ‘The result of this determination bas been the market- ing of some 50,000 to 75,000 shares, thougn these amounts present but a moderato proportion of the groat bull holdings, At least one of the uptown oper- ators has stood to his guns, without flinching, and if Jett in the lurch by his confreres, has bad experience enough on the “briny’’ of similar eccentric move- ments not to scare badly at the situation, The same js believed to be true of Mr. Keene and his following, who are asserted to be holding on with a real or pre- tended confidence inhigher figures. Whether the re- Viring parties—like the wicked which flee when no man pursueth—have been unnecessarily scared, or whether the stayers will come to a distant and costly grief by not quitting in time, the future will deter- mine, The very decided improvement which showed Itseif after midday was a protty sure sign that things were not to be allowed to go to rack and ruin instanter, and that if necessary a power could be ex- ted to prevent it, So much was developed this afternoon—helped, {t 1s true, by the demand to cover sports and an easier money market—as sufficed to add from %% to 8 per cent to the lowest figures of the day to close up quotations firmly. It does not seem hkely, however, that the advance will be renewed immedi- ately. The market has received ‘a pretty severe blow, and with Mr. Gould opon tne short side to keep the wounds from healing the efforts of some new shorts to help bim and the desire of the ‘‘outs’’ to get in again (but only when lower prices make an induce. ment), all tend to keepthe market in a feverish con- dition for some time to come.
