The National Hide und Leatner Association of the United States, one of the most powerful and influcn- Wal trado guilds in this country, will hold ite annual vession in this city during the current week at the Union League Theatre, The initial meeting was caliod to order yesterday at twelve o'clock by Marshall Jowell, of Connecticut, and lasted until a late hour in the afternoon, An adjournmept was then declared until ten o'clock this morning. Sessions will be hold daily throughout this week until Saturday, which day will be devoted to visiting the publio institutions of the city. Perhaps the most smportant subject to come before the Convention 1s the tariff upon leather. Mr. George H. Allen, of Milwaukee, will read a papor ad- vocating a reciprocity treaty with Canada and suggest- \pg an arrangement by which he claims the tari! can be reduced so ,as to benefit not only the trade, but the government. The rela tive topping virtues of various barks, the methods of classifying bides aud leath Statistics of the trade and the respective qualitics of American and European loatper, will form the sub- Jects of diecussion during the week.
