Watt Saxe, Mowpay, Oct. 8—6 P.M. ‘The fires of speculation burned with more ardor than ever this morning, possibly becauso vhoy had romained banked over Sunday, or had gained incroased energy by being pent up during a day of idleness. Whether the market was unnaturally cooked by the bulle or simply pboilod over of its own accord matters not—the fact remains that {t was made piping ot for the bears and that Erie raled the roast. It is a long time since Erie bas ruled anything and its prominenco to-day took the street by surprise. More particularly in that the price ran up from 13% to 15} in face of heavy tales by the Teutonic element, which evidently found % more german to tho matter’? to sell than ‘to buy. To one how alone are credited sales of some 15,000 shares and others are known to have contributed an importaut quota to the general total, Subsequently it proved that these enterprising descendants of the Goths and Visigoths bad been literally turning an honest penny by purchasing upon the London market and selling upon the home one At the nd of the day the price declined to 14%, to the accompaniment of large trans- actions and mach excitement, During the first hour the entire ust was advanced from % to 1% per cent, Lake Shore and Contra! and Hudson getting the cream of the rise, Ap hour after the whole market bad lost the previous gain, and, with o(ten-recurring pulsa- tions between advance and retreat, the day wore on to its close, Daring the last half hour a sudden aepres- mon set in, due to a desire to realize, and the final prices were down to nearly tho lowest points of the session, A sharp soven per cent demand for money on call, which had a look of perma- nency about it and some rumors that large loans ‘would be cafled to-morrow, created an uneasy feeling among the light brigade of speculators, who are but indifferently agmed either as to collaterals or credit, ‘and som position was evinced to gat to the rear before the fray should commence.
