The following rem spre 1b: lo the latter part of soa. 1875, Embry Cannon, bis son William and two nephews, got on a big@pree in Rockwell, Texas, and created great disturbance in the town uptil 4 late bour of the nigot, sheriff Alexander C. starks was on intimate terms with the Cannons and endeavored to persuade them to desist from their riot- ous proceedings, but was unsuccessiul. He then warped (bem that if they did not stop disturbing the peace he would be obliged to lock them up, ‘This only made them worse and tho whole party ussaulted the Sverifl and be and cut bim very severely. During méelée the Sh drew his re- volver aud spapped it several times, but none ot the chambers exploded. ‘The party scattered, however, and Starks, procuring a better weapon. fol: lowed the Cunnous with the intention of arresting them, He fouad them in a billiard suloon, und wus ngaln set upon by the whole purty, and, defending biw- ot and killed William Canuoo, Ibis ended the amicable relation between Starks and the Cannons, and some me afterwards Starks was notifled that Ambry non Was irying to hire some desperado to assassinate him. ‘This became go evident that Starks olfered bis farm for sale, with the intention of movi to some othe: be would ve more soc! In September, ‘anger nppeared in Rock well, singularly droesed and armed with a doubie-barrelled sbotguo and several revolvers, He pretended to waot to buy a farm, and was relerred to Starks as having one for sale, He called on Starks, and, atter@ short conversation, both started for the farm, Starks 1m opposition to the earnest entreatics wile and the advice of some of bis neighbors. He never returned alive, but next moruing bis dead body wus found iw the woods with a joud of buckshot 11 bis head, ‘Tho murderer fled. It was subsequently learned that bis uame was Geor, W. Garner, Im October fullowing the tourder the Grand Jury indicted Garner for the murder of Starks, und Embry Cannon us instigator of the crime, but ocither of them could be jound, It seems, however, that a sho time prior to the murder of Starks, Gurper bad shot the Sheril of Lee county, Texas, while that officer wus attempiing bis arrest, and rewards aggregating $1,000 were offered tor bim. Whea the Sheriff of Lee county recovered from his Wounds he aetermined to capture Gurner, and-atter a long search founy him in a little town neur Little Rock, Ark., und succecded in arresting wod taking him to L county, where he was turned over to the authorities of Rockwell county last March, He wastried in may and convicted Starke’ Pia and sentenced to be hanged on the lin of une. To-day, after bis conviction, he made a confession that Embry Cannon hired bim to kill Starks for $500 cash, a note for $125 and a team ot horses. Last Tuvsouy evening Mrs, Garner was permitted to onter the jail to remaio with ber busband unsil bis execu- tion, This morning on opening Gurver’s eoll the Sheriff found Mrs, Garner deud and ber busbund al most lilel A physician wus sent for, but before arrived Garner died. Both leit letters. In the one written by Mra. Garner she guid she purchased mo poiue at Dalias two weeks ago, und took it into the jail im ber mouth, A question then uro-e as to whe- ther there was enough to kill both, aud which of them suould take the largest portion of it, Mrs, Garner evidently took enough to kill ber, but there were marks ubout her neck which showed she bad also been strangled. Gurner also took some of the poison, but when tound this morning be had cotton stuffed in bis nostrils, and bundkerchiet crammed down bis turoat und a wire, tho bail ol # bucket in hiscell, twisted wround his neck, evidently not being satisfied that they bad taken enough morphine to kill, they finwsbed tbe job by strangulation. The verdict of the Jury was death by strangulation, Mrs, Garner's letter turther states that it was pot througs ber husband’s Persuasion that eho gave up all to 5 with bim, BLOOD SLAINED CRIMINALS. A FARMER AND HIS THREE 8ONS GUILTY OF FOURTEEN MUKDELS. : [From the Albany (Mo.) Ledger.] But few of our oldest citizens do not know George Brown, who settled on what is now known as the Pringle farm, two and a@ half miles west of town, ip about the year 1850. George Brown, during the time he lived in this county, was a respected citizen anda member of the Christian Church, He had three sons— George, Jesse ond Josiau—who were avout men when they leit here, which took place in the year 1855 or thereabouts From here they removed to Texas, in which State they have resided since. They have lately been arrested upon a complaint filed against them by Samuel Borris, who married a daughter of George Brown, Sr. Froin tbe facts developed since the arrest of Brown, his sons, Borris and othors we are unable to name, composed one of the most daring and murderous or- gavizations that ever iniested the wilds of a Texan frontier, The complaint charges them with fourteen murders of the darkest apd most appalling nature. The exposure of the Browns by their contederate and relative was brought about as follows:—It seems that Jease was the chief of the clan, and gave orders which were as binding as an oath, and what- ever be commanded must be done. ‘they wero organ- ized under the pretence of putting down lawlessness audcrime. Jesse was married, and be and his wite bad a failing out, and they both went out of nighis, ding to listen to the song of the pightin, which resulted finally 1a th: separation, The woman (Jesse’s wile) knew the secrets of the lodge or orguni- zation, and Jesse (the chie!) said that she knew wo much, and that she must die for the salely of the clan, It seems that Mrs, Brown and Borris’ wife were very intimate; and so Jesse gave ord that she, must die, and ‘proceeded to appoint the executivone the women—one bis own wile and the other bis sigter. He appointed this Samson Borris to take the life of his (Jesse’s) wile, avd some other member of the party to take the life ot Borris’ wife. But betore the time ap- pd ted to tuke the lives of the women Borris revolied inst being the participant ip such an ipbuman deed. So be secretly souybt out the authorities, mi his complaint and caused the arrest of bis tatner-in- law and bis three brotbers-in-law, Recent developmenis show that they were guilty of fourteen murders, Young George has bad his trial and was found guilty and wag senienced to be sanged, but has appoaled his case to the Supreme Court of the jorge Brown, Sr., and the other so be tried this moath, They Jail, able story is related in a | despatch to the St, Louis Globee Democrat, June REVENGE WITH AN AXE. The charge is a most serious as well as a most natural one, seeing the wonder bas been expressed all along that Indians, lawiess as they aie generally considered, could resist taking the law into their own bands. The Presbytére, which is on a point enurely, leuced off trom the village, was nearly con- sumed belore the church caught jatter was noxt the Indian portion of the village, and the wind was biowing from the church toward the Presbytére, The inference is, therefore, tenable that the Indians did not commit the deed, They would not, it 18 thought, Wait till broad daylight to do it and then take un- necessary risk of exposure to do the work badly. Tho priests of the seminary kuew that the [ndians we: nd, having mea to protect tl y they ‘should allow an Indian to i 80 nour as to do mischief. One circumstance in con- nection with this pew phase of the question de- serves notice. Several Indians were arrested daring the past winter, and there was no attompt waae atarescue by their comrades, Why, then, was this brigade of thirty or more men, headed by ten Provin- cial police trom Quebec, engaged to rush upon them in their beus at midnight, and, like the destroying angel ot Egypt, ake away ono out of every family, exoept those protected by the cross? It is a good sign of the inno. cence of the indians of any intended offence that even twenty-four hours after the arrests they were not aware what their crime was, This 1s not a matter which demands apy bard word: uch will but weaken the cage uf those who use them. 1¢ demands an earn- est, ubtiring investigution, that wrong may be righted, It the Indians or any one of them sot tre to the build. ipys, their sufferings may somewnut paliiate but cannot excuse their crime; if any one else did it, there is neith palliation nor it the cause was a catural one, fortunate that it should bi happened at this time; if any of the adberents of the church did the deed no punishment could be too severe, universal quus- on now is, “What next???
