Sontinnation of the Coroner's Inquest—Mrs. Guneser's Condition. eosamemereeencoeoet The terrible tragedy ai Eust Williamsburg of Sun- day night attracts greater attention as the mystery surrounding the affair seems to deepen. The driver, ‘William Schmidt, who was the last man tn the barroom John Gunser, the murdered man, and was arrested on Monday evening, was taken om the Fifth precinct station house to the scene of the murder by Sergeant Fielding yesterday morning about half-past eleven o'clock, George Griess, the other prisouer, baving Deen released. After a few minutes’ private conversa- tion with Coroner Carrol he was taken to the scene of the tragedy and confronted with the corpse 01 the deceased, It was lying in a large ice box im the north- west corner of the barroom, and sitting and stand- ing around the room were thirty or forty of the relatives and friends of the deceased, eagerly watching the scene, Schmidt fearlessly and without bianching looked at the corpse, saying, us he did so, “I am sorry for him, but I don’t know uny- thing about the murder.” He tnen lingered for a moment OF two gazing on the corpse, and, turn- ing away, engaged in conversation with a few friends until the Coroner ordered him removed until the inquest in the evening. Adam Martin, the employé of Gunser, who was examined on Monday, and Maria Ebrhardt, bis betrpthea, who resides close by, were closely interrogated yesterday respecting the domestic relations of the Gunsers, and after some talk.and an admission made by Mrs, Gun- eor’s'sister, acknowledged there was some difficulty be- tween deceased and his wife arising from her too great Intimacy with Willam Schmidt, Mrs. Michacl, th wife of the barber, with whom the Guugers bave had frequent quarrels and twoor three lawsuits, who re- Rides in the next house, says that Mrs, Gunser fre- quently upbraided her busband on bis lameness—be bad one short leg—and on one occasion, after calling bim a “crooked dog,” be seized her by the bair and dragged ber around the room, kicking ber. Mrz. Gunser gave birth to a child on the od inst., and Saturday last was the frst time she left her room and was very weak all day Sunday, and ber condition, In view of the injuries received at the bands of the assassin, renders her condition very critical, though Dr. Charles J. Stahl, her medical attendaut, thinks she will ultimately recover. The Coroner and District Attorney Downing impressed upon nim the necessity of a more searching examination into What she knew of the wurder, and, despite his appeal to postpone it for a day or two until she was a Iittle stronger, he was compelled to allow it to take piace, und under the pressure of Mr. Downing divulged that which will undoubtealy lead to the arrest of the ly au. The continuation of the inquest followed er blutement, and uiter the lence was taken Will- jom Schmtdt was released on bis own recognizance to appear und testily wuen called upon, ‘The woman, who saw the mun by tho light of a keroe sene lamp, tbouzb partially dazed by the lirst blow she received in her forebead and by tbe blood flowing down her {uce, fully recognized the assass!u, who, it is hoped, will soon be in custody. Members of the Windsor and other dramatic clubs suppliod the lst of performers, who for the most part acquitted themselves | with zeal and-credit, Scenes from the “Honeymoon” were represented, and the ‘'Mun of Many Frienus”? was given as a concluding comedy. A recitation and tho grave digger’s scene from “Hamlet,” with four charac. | ters represented ventriloquially, were inciuded. A good selection of music was rendered by an orchestra composed of members of the Mozart Masical Union, “The Princess Royal’ is in its second week at the Grand Opera House, and appears to be attracting fair houses, Wo notice certain little inattentions on the part of the actors tuat would hardly be tolerated at the Firth Avenue Theatre, and we imagine the patrons of the Grand Opera are entitled to quite as much consideration ag those of the Fifth Avenue, For instance, at the pertormances on Monday night tho actors were not ready to ‘come on” atthe proper moment three or four times, Making a very annoying hitch in the performance. This was notably the caso ym the last scene, whore Coghlan should havo rushed to the rescue of John Uroughom; Kerner could have slain His Majesty three or tocr times betore Trenck appeared sword in hand, to reseue the poor Prussian King, with his Hibernian broguo, from the onsinught of | bis traitorous captain, ser testilled as loliows:—Kesideon Forrest | persons | RACING IN.
