MISS ADELAIDE NEILSON IN ‘CYMBELINE.” Shakespeare, like the sunrise, is always new, even in those plays with which we are tamibar, but bis gemus appears still more dazzling when the curtain rises and reveals in visible action characters which we only know by imagination, ‘'Cymbeline,’? we believe, has not been performed in New York ior forty years, und is alinogt as tresh to the public as if it haa been written expressly for the Fifth Avenao Theatre, as was “The Princess Royal” or “Vique.”” It is potas strong an acting play as ‘Othello’? though Vosthemus bears a kind of resemblance to Othello, lachime to Jago, and Imogen to Desdemona. The passions are subdued into beauty, and that which might have been ade terrible is softened into pathos, Those whe found this play tedious have not studied it” Lt is worth a whole wilderness of French monkeys. Nearly every live in it is pure gold, and might be beaten out into a lyric. 1tg speech is far above singing and listening to its noble thoughts, We more deeply feel tho trath of tho lines: How caring is divine philosophy, Net harsh and rugzed, ax duil fool4 sappore, But musical asis Apoils’s lute, Miss Nejlson’s conception of Imogen, ono ot the greatest of sShakespeare’s women, is evidently unaltered since she. first played ia Philadelpbia ast February, at ness and delicacy of the character 18 easily ex- pressed by a lady who is best iu all that is most fomi- mine As Rosalmd, Juliet and Viola, Miss 18 more charming than even divine y, but we would not sh to P see her as Lady Macbeth, Nature never intended ber to drown the stage with tears, to make mad the guilty und appal the freo, bat to woo and win the softer sym- pathies, Ln fmogen she finds a beautiful opportunity for her special genius, and she uses it well, She made ber first great dramatic hit Ip the third act, when she is called to meet Posthumus at Mullord, and the passage beginning,’ “Oh for a horse with wings!” was read with electrical effect, Still finer was the delivery of tho great scene when sho hears that Posthumas velteyes her to be talse, In some of her readings we think her in error, bat to pot out all tne merits of her isterpretation of the text would be to quote most of (no lines The whole of the fourth act was admirably given, and particuiuriy the entrance to the cave, in which the fear of a woman was artistically discriminated from the trepidations of | F Rosalmd and Viola when dressed as men. The now Imogen {s a thorough success, and Miss Neilson was, of course, called before the curtain and made the fairiost Hower In a conservatory ot ros The y was generally well acted, czpecially by Messrs, Plympton, Studley, Fisher and Haworth, ‘Yhe scenery was new and attractive, and the house, of course, crowded from top to bottom. WALLACK’S THEATRE— ‘*ROSEDALE.” “Bosedalo”’ Mr. Wallack’s romantic play, was re- vived at his theatre last evening betore a large au dience, with excellent eflect. ‘Rosedale’ 1s too familiarly kuown to metropolitan audiences and too intimately associated with Mr, Wallack’s own achieve, ments to make its reproduction at this time the apology for a rehearsal of its feutures. We need only mention that Jast night recalled past suc- cosses Very vividly indeed, that the scenery was very fine and that the cast embraced nearly the entire strength of Mr. Wallack’s company, to convey an idea of the manner in which the play was received. More- over, it was the means of bringing out again some prominent members of the company who have been absent from the boards during the production of “My Awtul Dad.’ For its more complete presentation, wo are told, thero had been elaborate prepara- tion, and certainly last ntght’s performance | did not belie the assertion, for all went, smoothly and satisfactorily. Mr. Baker, 100, was at considerable pains to rearrange the music, for be succeeded in giving usa very pleasing mélange, ‘erbracing welcome melodies—soino novel, some familiar—and an entirely new overture. As Eliiot Grey Mr, Walluck was as crisp, hearty and viva- cious as need be, Mr, John Gilbert gave a realistic pieture of the villain, Miles McKenna, Mr. Beckett's powers ot comedy found ample vent in the peculiarities of Bunberry Kobb. Mr. Aruott was very carnest and at times correspondingly eloquent as Matthew Leigh, and Mr. Cyril Searle reflected creditably the character of the gentiemanly scoundrel, Colonel Cavendish May. Miss Ada Dyas, whose Lady Vlorence May was a graceful and tinished representation, had a narrow es- cape from accident im the second act, While leaving the stage a scatlolding, eupporting the stairs to tho back, gave way, and she fell afow feet behind the scone, necessitating a momentary interruption of the play, but fortunately escaying injury. Miss kiflle Ger- mon played Rosa Leh cheerily, aud Mrs. Sefton and Mrs, Farren, each in ber sphere, did wellas Sarah Sykes and Tabitha Stork, With this brief mention we may let the curtain drop on **Rosedale,”’ merely add- jng that any one who bis not had the tortune to see TE Plty horototore may seo it now under the most pleasing conditions possible. Rosedate Manor and the gypsy camp were beautttul scenes and both justly elicited liberal applause. 3 MR, RIGNOLD AT BOOTH’S. The now management which has succeeded Jurrett & Palmer at Booth’s opened tbo spring and summor season last night with a programme sufficiently at- tractive to merit encouragement. Coming 1m so late in the season, tt is, perhaps, natural that some allow- ance should be made for certain defects in the setting of the pieces which were presented, This apart, there was much to praise, The opening piece, in three acts, by Messrs. Simpeon and Merivale, entitled “Alone,” in which Mr, Rignold took the leading rdle, ts wanting in action, but contains some strong points and brisk dialogue, The motive of the play is drawn | from the Lear of Shakespeare, but It Is toned down to the exigencies’ of a_ frock cout and a retired English colonel, Mr. Rignoia ag Coionel Chalhee, old and blind and embitiered | against the world, but with a kindly heart in spite of | its rough husk, played with considerable force and sus- tained ns trying part votil the close, when, with his eyesight and long Jost daughtor restored, he resolves never more tobe alone, Mr. F. B. Warde played Dr. Mucklethwait with tine hamor, bat the surprise of the evening was the vivacious acting of Miss Marie Bra- brook in ihe part of Mrs, Thornton, a charming malade wmaginaire, The daughter, played by Miss ©, Church, was an earnest piece of acting. “Black Eyed Susan’ coucluded the evening's perform- ance, with piquant Miss Nina Varian iv the title ri, The William of Me. Rignold is as dashing, gymuastic, pathetic and breezy as it should nd to see the woilom Henry V. tripping in the satlor’s hornpipe 1s enough to repay anybody for enduring this relic of dramas in blue jackets, with ohe or two men and women aud a number of characters or caricatures en silhouette, THE NEW YORK AQUARIUM, | ‘A very valuable collection of tropical fishes, living sponges, corals and anemones have been received at the New York Aquarium from Bermuda, Beautiful angel | and zebra {ish are among the varieties, besides pink squirrel fishes, the curious horseman fish, bright yel- low grunts, bine fishes, sea surgeons, £0 called from their baving a keen edged gpive in the tail, which cuts | and wounds like a lancet, Seyilarus wquinoxialis, a | very rare and funny Jooking creature o! many colors A Quebce telegram announces the capture ot a white whale off the lle aux Cendres and it will arrive hero | inatew days, These novelties wili, no doubt, attract crowds to the aquarium. H MUSICAL, AND DRAMATIC NOTES, Whe andience at the Boston Theatre last night was | dismissed at che close of the second act of Miss Mule ton,” the manager assigning as,a reason insufficient rovearsuls owing to Miss Morris’ indisposition, (he seventh annual operatic entertainment given by Mme, Murio-Celli and her pupils at the Lyceum The atro last evening was attended by a small audience, ‘As the performers were all amatours the performance | does not aliow of criticism Mr, Frank Gilder gave a concert at Park Hail; New. | ark, last ovening, with bis Young America Singing ‘The concert was well attended and warmly ap- | ne feature of the evening was the singing | of Master Thomas E. Montgomery, the boy soprano, | who sang, besides some simple music, a difficult ro- manee, “The Koad to Paradise,’ by Blumenthal, Since Coker we have had ro boy soprano equal to Master Montgomery. Tho performance to be given to-morrow afternoon | Arch Street Theatre, Pbiladetptia, by the youn,: actress, Miss Elle Elleler, for the purpose of enabling the members of tho dramatic profession to witness her, will be an unusual and interesting event.’ Her brethren and sisters in the art who are vow in New York aro cordially invited by the management of Mrs. Drow’s theatre. Sr. Louis, Mo., May 14, 1877. Another injunction suit was instituted on Saturday in the United States Circuit Court by Baring Brothers & Co., of London, agawst the St, Louis, Iron Moun- tain and Southern Railway Company, and Thomas Allen, president, and Henry G, Marquand, vico pres! dent. The petition in the ease alleges a violation of the agreement of the funding scheme, and asks that certain resolutions, pagsed at different times by the Board of Directors, under which certain bonds were transierred to Allen and Marquand and others and ordered to be sold, be sot aside and declared uull and void. The subpeenas in the case are made returnavle June 4, Colonel W. R.
