RACING IN ENGLAND. THE CBACKS OF THE SEASON. {From the Sportsman, April T.J ‘Turf history bas nothing more interesting In ite pages than the incidents counected with the runing for the Two Tuousand Guineas, the Derby and St. Leger. Although the wagering on tbe City and Suburban ts ex- pected to be of @ more than usually animated charac- ter during the race meetings now being beld in various Parts of the country the sympatmes of a large pro- Portion of tho British public are novertheless centred in the great three-year-old events of the season. Tarl- men of long experience are well aware that it is notn- 4ng at all uncommon for the most unaccountable and " pgrploxing fluctuations in the market status of the lavorites for the great races over the Rowley Mile and Epsom Downs to take place at this period of the ‘The proceedings that took placo last week in refer- ence to the market position of Chamant for the Two Thougand Guineas and Derby were, iu my opinion, due rathor to the opening of more books and the desire of an increased number of layers to speculate on the great races than to anything that could be wrong with the favorite, who still maintains his position ut the bead of the quotations for these two events, In my remurks recently published on the Derby horses | statea that Chamant was not what I may term ® really high class racehorse in appearance, but that he was uncommonly good in certain very essential points, combined with thorough sound- ness in wind and limb, and that no prudent epeculator could afford to overlook the really splendid torn he showed usin the two races for the Middle Park and Dewhurst Plates. I, however, wrote that the son of Mortomer did not appear to mo to have improved in a degree commensurate with his age, and ‘m my final remarks on the Derby candid: I wrote my firm opinion that Pellegrino would give the ta- Vorite more (rouble to shake him off at Epsom than at the duish of their race tor the Blenkiron prize. Since then J have neither scen nor heard anything Prejudicial to the pretensions of Chamant to win the Great races beyond the now universally admitted fact that he has not thickened us much as have other horses that ure hkely to oppose om as a three-year- old,. The best points of Chamant lie in his immonsely strong back aud loins, aod these, combined with his very well placed shoulders, will probably compensate him for great bulk in Other portions of bis frame, where it 18 much less needed to enable bim to gallop last and stay without tiring under racing weights, ln reference to Chamunt 1 can only state that, although he will, in my oj inion, have a most dangerdus opponent in Morier for tbe two Thousand Guipeus and hn grino for the Derby, £ will net say one word in dis] ement of his two-year-old Tunniog nor his 8; fepaid, chagoo to. cat everythiug down in the two races at Newmarket and Epsom, Yom Jennings has a rather different system of gallop- ing his horses to most traimers at Newmarket, Inasmuch thut he seads them aloug in larger lols. Laat week, on uore than one occasion, he sent Beaurepaire, Verneuil, Chamant, Pivonnet, Loopold, Queen of Cyprus, Plus aante, Hallate and Doucereuse in gallops of one mile and a quarter ut a good pace round the Long Hill This occurre: on Wednesday, and as the lavorite covered the same distance with several of these utd othor horses on the following day there could be no reason, ou the score of unsouoduess, for his retrogression of about half point in the betting. For my own part 1 think the galloping of horses in low of from five to ten or a dozen is capital method of training them, They thus beconie used to ucting together in a compact body, as thoy aro necessarily compelled to do in the Deroy and many other races, ‘they consequently be- come more clever in threading thoir way through their companions, and so assisting, by instinct und Pructice, their riders to avoid collisions, Just the same Qs a well practised old hunter will “creep” and, by hook or crook, got over a “trappy”’ and difficult coun- try where a young or “raw” animal would come to pe Practical borsemen aro aso well aware that & igh-couraged thoroughbred or half-vred wilt gallop more ireely in company with a lot of horses and an Occasional change of companions than when exer- cised day by day and week after week in the wake of one ammual that 1s frequently Appointed to lead him regulurly in bis work until both become as cunning a8 Christians. Beuuropuire, who has mostly been one of the lot gal- Joped at exercise with Chamant, 1s a very good looking uuimal, aud ti 1 were on the lookout tor a horse to curry me to hounds | should preter him to the favorite tor the Derby, but I do not think he is so well tramed 8 the favorite for racing purposes, and turtmen are well aware that itis long oads aguinst a dark horse in the stable being able to rival the really splendid form shown by Chamant in the last two races in which be ‘Was Viciorious 08 a two-yeur-old, Actwon bus been, during the past week, ovcasionally backea for the Derby ai tong shots, and a more biovd- like or truihtully formed colt 1 would not desire to sec, ‘He 1s, too, a bexutiiul mover, but standing only Utteeu anus two inches, with not go much bune, substance aud length as | desire to see in one of my champions to avsolutely win the great raco at Epsom, 1 do not hke to recominend him in preterence to what I consider 13 a betier looking candidate in tne same stuble. This Peilegrino, a borse with more size, length and power than Actwon, and, although not so big or lengthy us Morier, be is better uuapted tor the gradients of the raubing track tor the Derby. Nothing would, however, Surprise me fess than to see Morier beat Chamant tor tue Two Tuousanu Guineas; for, although he isa rather loose made animal in bis’ build, his action ig as light and corky as the movement of a polo pony. He stands just sixteen bands and a quarter of an inch, bem, one Inch taller than Pellegrino, but not so compactly put hogether, and tue ater has puvlic form—econd voly to Chamant in the Middle Park Piate—iu bis favor, If anything were to go wrong with Chamant, thore would, however, be uothing that | should pi Pellegrino us being likely to win the Derby, Thi ent favorite for the first two great races of the ave the Russley colt 6 Ibs. and beat him by a ud tor the Middle Park Plato, Since then— 80 far as oue can judge by appearances—Peliegrino bas made by far the greater improvement of the two, Bo that | quite expect bim to suow better iorm with the son of Mortemer at Epsom than he did at Newmar- ket as a two-year-old, Plunger may rua better in the race for the Two Thousand Guineas than I auticipated, but it is rather bold kind ot pol.cy for me to preter , A colt Lhat has not yet seoa a race course, uga‘ost an undoubtedly | good perlormer like the son of Adventurer, In any | \ case, bo long ag Chamant and Morier keep well, 1 shall not recommend Plunger as being likely to win the ruce over the Rowley Mule. Silvio 1s a remarkably nice colt, and, as I bave already stated in my winter notice ol the Derby and Two Tovagand horses, | think be will veat bis stable companion, Lady Gohghtly, m both races, wherever the two may fluish, but I au not believe be will be vic- torious in either ove or the other contes| The Monk ts a blood like, symmetrical and thor- oughly sound colt, and at bis present quotation of © 1 Jor both the Two Thousand and Derby I tee! cer- tain that ne will see capital hedging and run betier than the betting would appear to imdicate, Thunderstone 1s another colt tuat should be marked dangerous, jor bis immense size, leagth and power, | combined With fairiy good symmetry, will serve bint well im his journey over tie Rowiey Mile, ae not recomincud bim tor the Derby, Warren Hastings will also, in iny opinion, be seen to more advantage over the tut course at Newmarket a2] wheo descending the bill from fattenbum Corner in the race tor the Derby. horse has immense bone ud power, and the “pitch” of his heavy trame will not be atail in favor of his very small and not well shaped feet io his preparation for any race when the ground becomes bard, Rob Roy is much quieter In the market than he was about six Weeks ago, but he t# atl quoted at 10 w 1 for the Derby. Although I am uot 1p @ posit.on to say of my own Kuowiledge that Lis colt 18 affected m Lis wind, my advices from what L consider a wrastworihy me that this i$ at least un incipient symptom ng. We have, however, the fuct that tne son of Blair Athol bas oeeh backed’ somewhat beavily by his owner for the Derby, and one would certainly wink that be would not risk his money without first cousult- ing Bianton, who I have jor many years cousidered one of tue most practical men jo is call ing. Should, however, he be mistaken in ret. erence to the symptoms Which ft ig almost universally deciared at Nowinarket the colt has manifested, the Bon of Blair Athol canuct win the Derby. Whether Rob Roy be sound in bis wind or a roarer, ho will not, in Iny opinion, develop into aw stayer good enough to win the Derby. As a proof that layors are dead against rourers lor t reat race at Epsom, we have ouly to Jook at the position occupied by Chevron in the betting on that eveut, The loug odds of 40 to 1 are offered against the son of Rosicracian, than whom tere is no better looking nor sounder imbed colt in the whole of | the entries, and he has besides some excoilent two- Year-otd form in bis favor, ‘The Rover ia, L notice, quoted at the same price Bilvio jor the Derby, vut nile it ie ny opinion that the imbs of the former will not stand the ordeal preparation for the great race, the latter, who is ou by (be same sire (ilair Athol), bas all the appearance of wearing well through the season. Silviv 1s ulso a better looking colt, and, on the whole, was a better performer as atwo-vear-oid than The Rover, The lauter was certainly well up atthe nigh of the race for tbe Middie Park Plate, but he had only 8st. Glbs. on his beck, With lightaod badly formed limbs wherewnh to commence bis long and strong work on hard ground, I cannot seo how iis at all fikoly that tm tho race for the Derby—it even he be started—he can make ap for the lost ground between bim apd Coamant in the Middle Park Piate, to say nothing of the Tibs, which the Angiv-French colt conceded bin in that race, For those who are partial to backing out+ siders for the Derby, my udvice would be to support Biivio in preference to The Rover. Fieldiare, mh the same stabie as Silvio, is quoted at seven points less than tho son of Blair Athol and be m & very good-luoking colt, with rare legs and feet to stand ble preparation, His solitary per- formance of last season, wien unpiaced to Leopold, Hidalgo and Prince Giles L, nod with the eld Archer oo bis back, Goes not appear to gi bin a shadow of achanco to beut Silvio, or to tke any prominent part im the race for ti je Derby. Ho 13, however, a far better colt than b m would appear to indicate, and he is now domg some good work jor the period of the season in company witb Queen's Herald and Silvio, chiefly led by Skylark, King Clovis {g another ae looking colt iv Lord Faimouth's Dorvy jeum, but he docs not appear to ve in such active work as the othors, of whom, I think, neither Fiold- fare nor Queen’s Herald will develop into as good hoi As Silvio Lady Golightly 9, Of course, tho very bost pol oriner of wil the Heath House lot NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, APRIL 30, 1877—TRIPLE SHEET. id ces, but she is and while pot moro just her for the two Thou- wand Guineas 1 do Bot suppose thut any diili- culty would be experienced about her tor the Dervy, NTED—FEMALE: __SITUATIONS WANTED—FEMALESe | _SYPUATIONS WA! eo “Cooks. ¢ Se WEST 92D ST.—A LADY BREAKING UP HOUSE- exping is desirous of procuring employment, for first class servants; cook, chambermal asiet sale and ironing aid waitress, Call between 11 8 ‘yea very quiet in the bettn Cooks, We. than § to 1 1s offered AST 11TH ST.-AS COOK, WASHER AND er ores general housemaid in @ mall family; &e.
